I have a question for people who understand vocaloids
Quinneapolis
What's the deal with, like... vocaloid subclasses?
Quinneapolis
Like there's the main clan, Miku and Friends
Quinneapolis
who are always associated with each other
Quinneapolis
but then there's also things like Akane and Aoi, or Hime and Mikoto
Quinneapolis
who I guess belong to someone else but still use the same software or something?
Quinneapolis
and are never seen on the same stage as miku OR friends
Quinneapolis
what's the deal with them
Quinneapolis
what's an UTAULOID
NekoInc, MSPM
Okay, lessee...
NekoInc, MSPM
The characters owned by Crypton, plus Yowane Haku (who was an Internet Creation whose main creator basically gave Crypton "do whatever" privs IIRC) are classified as "Miku and Friends"... In part because they're now on a newer software than Yamaha's VOCALOID.
Quinneapolis
but what about before that software shift? isn't that super recent
NekoInc, MSPM
Yamaha has some characters they directly own who are the current VOCALOIDS
NekoInc, MSPM
It was, yeah, but there was tensions between Crypton and Yamaha for a while apparently
NekoInc, MSPM
UTAU is a different vocal simulation software, and its big thing is anyone can create voices for it - which led to a boatload of characters ensuing very quickly.
NekoInc, MSPM
In the fandom, it's common to treat the characters as one huge cast. In official marketing which Crypton has long ruled the roost on, not so much obviously
NekoInc, MSPM
Apparently part of the issue is Crypton wanted to issue web updates, which Yamaha opposed? So. Weird.
Quinneapolis
what are mikoto and hime
NekoInc, MSPM
Those two I don't know offhand and would need to look up x_x
Quinneapolis
"Japanese VOCALOIDs developed and distributed by Gynoid Co., Ltd" says the wiki
Quinneapolis
how do characters like this factor into the "Miku legally isn't a vocaloid" situation
Quinneapolis
the rich and varied tapestry of vocaloid culture is fascinating when you consider how Hatsune Miku has about as much canon characterization as Mr. Clean
Cup of Spiders
Quinneapolis : oh iirc Crypton owned Vocaloids are the only one now under that weird legal clause
Anyone who isn’t the Crypton 6 is still a vocaloid
Cup of Spiders
Crypton 6 being: Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Kaito, and Meiko
Quinneapolis
So ONLY Miku and friends, the original vocaloids, are not vocaloids
Cup of Spiders
Yep!
Technically they aren’t even the original vocaloids but that’s a whole other thing
Cup of Spiders
In terms of internet vocaloid fandom, Gakupo snd Gumi are often grouped with the Crypton gang despite not being owned by Crypton, mostly bc they came out around the same time
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
it was explained up above but the tl;dr:
Cold XC
The most Vocaloid of Vocaloids aren't Vocaloids
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
- the Crypton Six (so, kaito, meiko, miku, rin, len and luka) belong to Crypton, who have split from Yamaha. They're not associated with Vocaloid anymore.
- Any other characters outside of Yamaha were developed by separate companies. Their voices use the Vocaloid engine, but their characters belong to the original company.
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
had something else i was going to add then i forgot
Quinneapolis
the Crypton Six (Miku, Rin, Len, Kaito, Luka, Kal El)
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
CV07: SUPERMAN
Quinneapolis
so I guess my bottom line question
Quinneapolis
is like
Quinneapolis
what does "VOCALOID" mean now
Quinneapolis
who owns that word
Quinneapolis
why can non-Yamaha people use it
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
Vocaloid is just the software
Quinneapolis
right, right
Quinneapolis
so the reason the CV6 can't be Vocaloids is they aren't on the software moving forward
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
Yep
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
That's why you'll hear Teto and characters like her being called UTAUs or utauloids, because the vocal synth they use is called Utau
Quinneapolis
oh is that Teto's deal
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
Yep!
Quinneapolis
I am satisfied with these explanations
Quinneapolis
thank you
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
She was originally created as an April Fool's joke on 2chan – someone made a fake website and everything promoting her as the new Crypton Vocaloid
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
And she got super popular, so she ended up having an actual voicebank made
thetaClysm
while we've got all the vocaloid-knowing people in one place, can i ask a question as well
Quinneapolis
yes
thetaClysm
what's the deal with all the people who compose vocaloid songs having names that end with "-p"
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
it's a holdover from the idolmaster fandom and idol fandom in general
Quinneapolis
I think it stands for Producer
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
the "-p" stands for producer
Quinneapolis
yes
Quinneapolis
I was right!
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
originally, people started attaching it to people's screennames as a show of respect, but as the fandom expanded and got bigger, widespread use of it fell out of fashion
𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲
or like, they'd come up with a cutesy nickname for them that described their musical aesthetic and attach the "-p", so their "-p" name basically meant "the producer who makes this kind of music"
thetaClysm
even tokyo mirage sessions had like, a fictional character with a name like that
thetaClysm
because that character made music with vocaloid-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off
MundersOWundus
Is this why Yoshi-P, producer of FF14, has the -P
Quinneapolis
yes
Quinneapolis
he's the producer
thetaClysm
Oh my god
thetaClysm
I would never have made the connection tbh
Quinneapolis
Shirobako also has a something-P character in it
