[something awful] lmao seeing a thread for 'lgbt+' people in the anime forum and watching them attack a gay dude for not phrasing things right and automatically decrying him as a 'straight ally' is like. yeah that's a microcosm of the worst parts of the movement right there
(also basically none of the people who called him that shit apologized once he clarified beyond one person because they automatically had him on ignore lmao :V)
On one end, it's good anime doesn't belong to alt-right assholes on the other... IT'S C L E A R some of these people learned their manners on tumblr and present day twitter.
automatically assuming people are attacking you instead of being misinformed is some of the worst attitudes I've seen pop up from tumblr in the last decade and it kills me because it is legit causing people to break away from the movement
which, again, kills me that the attitude isn't 'hey, I could potentally use this as a teaching movement and bring someone to a better way of thinking' but instead 'decry them and block so I get to feel superior'
actually no my mistake the 'apology' was 'well we have traumas and the shit you were saying (even though you said multiple times you have no support in your area) made US trigger happy' is
like, guys. gals. whatever. I get being defensive, but honestly? chill. People are actively getting driven away due to these attitudes, and it says something that you scream about acceptance and tolerance but shut down anyone the moment they appear to step out of 'what's acceptable'
or how it's somehow become 'acceptable' to be aggressive and shut others down in lgbt+ stuff, which....okay this is gonna be a hot fucking take, but is a combo of both insecurity and that cultural biases and how people were raised still affect people
there's always shit everyone has to unlearn re: society and local culture and it doesn't help anyone if you shut down people mentioning that or pointing it out to you
and that again cycles back to a lot of the (admittedly deserved) insecurity, because it's REALLY HARD to struggle with that kind of thing and navigate through shit that, if said, might make you question that already fragile self-determination you're doing
of course they preach tolerance. tolerance is not about acceptance. tolerance is power move by those with privilege who think they can be benevolent and magnanimous by going OH LOOK HOW I ALLOW THESE PEOPLE CLEARLY INFERIOR TO ME TO EXIST IN MY SPACES
especially when majority of those who are the loudest are white people who are socialized into seeing themselves as always the ones with the most important opinions while also being The Most Threatened And At Risk
when you live below the poverty line/are disabled you LEARN the difference between 'percieved microagressions' and 'guess what, you have to fucking fight for every scrap of things you get while the government basically decries you for 'not bootstrapping yourself'
part of that, IMO, is they recognize their huge class disparity creates a dissonance for them so they latch on to whatever makes them superior in some way.
because they are told that being poor is their fault by they're white so it can't be their fault so it must be God's Plan or Those Evil Immigrants or Corrupt Sinners
and people like to insist that black people get "free rides" in college for being black but uh...I was poor as fuck and black and still had to take out loans for my last two years of college
they do a lot to fuck over poor people in ways that even if they do give you some help financially they make it hard to get OR they make it very easy for them to take away
This reminds me of how Funi just dropped Interspecies Reviwers, not cause it's basically porn, but because of misconstrued context of a scene being considered transphobic
Also I think a big issue with a lot of lgbt anime is Japan is super conservative about these ideas and outside of some shoujo titles most of the content is weird fetishizations anyways, so it's really just a depressing scene all around
And from what we know... the Japanese claim to know less lgbt people than us. so what do think the anime/manga scene will be? it is changing. studios, shinigami tasogare is RIGHT there R I P E for adaption.
unrelated to lgbt but related to cultural differences, i straight up got in an argument with someone about why Sakura didn't drop her childhood crush on Sasuke because it was a childhood crush and they refused to acknowledge that Japan's handle on romance is as fucked as it is.
so like....Japan's culture is just like that and they'll shove it in if there as it's observed and experienced and yet also wonder why the birthrate is down
Yeah Hinata is based on his wife iirc which is why she was always going to get Naruto. Like he toyed with having Sakura "move on" with Naruto but ultimately decided that she "wasn't the kind of girl to betray her feelings," remember?
like i don't care what anyone says 90% of those manga are not as well written as we thought they were back then and majority of them are shitty to their female characters
i think the only series I started in the 90s and finished in the 2000s/is still going that i don't regret is One Piece and even that took a long time to get to a point where people besides the guys did stuff
studios, shinigami tasogare is RIGHT there R I P E for adaption.
