[shut up about starwars quinn][spoilers] I want to talk about the climax and Jenny Nicholson's talk about how she thought it was gonna go because it's a substantial improvement
but in imperiling Rey's friends, he gave her something to protect by taking his life, so that his death would be motivated by compassion for others rather than hatred of him
The movie leaned hard into the weird problem the franchise has of "it's cool to kill tons of people on the way to the baddie, but killing the baddie makes you as bad as them"
The ideal ending would have absolutely tied into one of the big lines at the end of Last Jedi: "We don't win by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love."
I want more of "If you kill me, then you're just as bad as me!" "What? That's stupid, killing ten thousand civilians is not identical to killing one mass murderer in order to prevent a mass murder"
It worked better in RotJ, I think, because there when Sheev's taunting Luke, you get the sense that it's quite possible he doesn't think Luke actually stands a chance of hurting him
And there's no obvious reason why killing the Emperor there would help the Rebel fleet, who are being killed by the Imperial fleet and the Death Star, not by Sith magic
If you believe the idea that Palpatine in this movie is the original's corpse basically being puppeted by a Sith Hivemind, that technically makes this Weekend at Sheev's
first of all all you had to do here was shut up for ten seconds
you'd think he'd have learned from making this exact same fuckup with Luke
