I REALLY hope the impeachment proceedings drag on through the end of 2020

my reasoning is this

You need a 2/3rds congressional majority to remove a president

There is not one Republican in congress with the spine required to not cling to Trump's legs like a sycophantic leech

Therefore, there is a 0% chance that an impeachment vote will remove Trump from office

And the instant this inevitability occurs

Trump is going to go all in on "They voted and didn't impeach me, therefore I won and have done nothing wrong in my entire life as proven by the government and god"

His base will believe this because they're idiotic fascists who will believe anything Trump says, and they'll be energized right before election season

please don't rush the proceedings, congress, just keep dragging Trump's dirty laundry over the country for the next year

so the House, after filing articles of impeachment, has to send them to the Senate for trial... but there's no limit on how long they can wait

and it's already being discussed strategically that several Republicans have, out loud on TV, sworn not to uphold the oath the Constitution requires them to take to be fair and impartial jurors

so the House can just. hold them back, and campaign on "Senate Republicans are saying in so many words that they will violate the constitution,"

Impeachment doesn't work when half the country is controlled by the "do anything to win and stay in power no matter what" party

one of the things I hate the most about this political situation - okay, one of several, but one -

is that it's turned me into a one issue voter

that issue being "are they or are they not Donald Trump"

2016 drained me even of the capacity to guess what kind of candidate has a better or worse chance of winning

I can't care about the candidates' actual views or strategies

because it's all so insignificant compared to the all-encompassing need to get the GOP out of the white house

every candidate boils down to "will they be able to beat Trump" and the answer is always "I have no fucking idea"

real talk, 2018 did a real number on my ability to keep my energy up, emotionally rather than logically, about my vote mattering and being able to make a difference

I got involved, I went to listen to local candidates talk, I joined someone's force and went in hard on helping the team make him win

I was distributed into a small group among a larger group that would represent my district

I voted, was outvoted in the small group
Onigashima
which was in turn rendered irrelevant by the actions of the larger group

then my guy lost

and it's like... that sure was a lot of energy that didn't go anywhere

I'll try really hard to care about the primaries

but 2020 hasn't even started and I'm already so fucking tired of it
