I understand now, I think. Reading fanfic without guide or filter is much like never, ever leaving the Town of Beginnings.

It just never goes anywhere, or is deliberately set to not go anywhere.

An endless loop of Welcome to Midenhall Castle.

With exception of the rare story that gets the gear, gets the clues, gets the King's blessing...and then is never heard from again. Forever lost in the first damn cave.
