Protag inherited a book that is magical (but e doesn't know this and it's a modern day kids go to another world story) but the lawyer guy who gave it to him knows its magical and dangerous

So at first I just had the book wrapped up in a box. But if the lawyer guy wants to keep him away from it, he would keep it somewhere safer

gotcha. then, it could always be a situation where he would have liked to put it in a more secure container but it came to him as-is so short of locking it in a safe he has to just go with it, in which case the cheap box is fine.

you could always use the compelling thing directly. if the book wanted to get into protag's hands then the book would make sure it wasn't put into a metal lockbox
