[FF7R] So apparently the drama for today (and I guess yesterday) was that popular youtuber VideoGame Dunkey had a video about E3 2019. In it, he said that FF7's plot is more confusing that Kingdom Hearts and could potentially be as bad as KH3 (he gave a 1/5) or as good as Vanilla FF15 (he gave a Chocobo/5, but generally had positive things to say about it)
Cue fans of Dunkey to frequently point out how his videos are all comedic in nature and not satire, though others will say 'yea, but he's serious in this one but not serious there' so it's a lot of cross wiring and confusion.
Doesn't help some vocal fans wish death threats on those who criticize him, but... fuck me, that's a different story
My opinion, I like Dunkey's videos and they make me smile, as stupid they can get. Sometimes he brings up good points in his opinion pieces and he brings up a good point about game design and presentation.
One of his stances and admitted faults (coincidentally in a video about Game Critics/Reviewers) is that he has no patience (Specifically naming RPGs), openly dislikes anime, and hates turn based combat.
Shortly after that video comes out, he does a video about Octopath Traveller and specifically editing it to make it look poorer than it actually is, rating it lowly. Few months later, he does a similar thing to KH3, pointing out it's crazy plot, continuity lockout, but also ragging on the battle system for... no reason it seems.
And finally, the FF7R comment that it's story is utterly unfollowable, which... he's entitled to think that, but compared to other plots, is it really that confusing? Sure, the focus villain changes within the first act of the game, but not much changes after that. I always found FF7's plot relatively straightforward
It's clickbaiting imo. His fans that hate RPG's will click with the idea of "How's he gonna SHOW THEM IDIOTS this time?" while the backlash generates more traffic for the views anyway.
I hate that it works that way and that he embraces it. Because he does have some solid opinions about the game industry, like the approach to remakes, game difficulty, etc.
It just sucks that he makes these reviews that may be satirical but has an air of "No I'm being serious" about them
And again, he's fine for disliking those things and giving the bad scores. Sure, it's his opinion. But then his followers (which he has like... 5 million subscribers) will go and start preaching the same word, like it's law because 'this reviewer I agree with says so'
The disappointing thing is that he doesn't have to. There's plenty of other new stuff out there he can cover for the relevancy, and offer actual insight for. Like, the people I follow on Youtube covers stuff they enjoy, and can critique that stuff a lot better because of it.
like, most people will say 'oh he is all satirical. Don't take what he says seriously' but then others will just use it as this fuel to basically tirade against people who like the thigs they don't like.
I really don't when it comes to his game reviews, but it's more how some of the more "devoted to his opinion" portion of his fanbase spreads what he shares as fact.
I guess I think of how political talk shows/news spreads their information and how their devoted will take what they say as fact, even if it's satire (Colbert Report) or straight lies.
The fact that people send death threats to begin with makes me really detest people. Nothing anyone says about a video game warrants death threats. Nothing warrants a death threat at all
yep. granted, I'm not saying "unsub from Dunk" because that's honestly not his fault necessarily, but I do grow concerned that certain kind of people get attracted to that sort of personality
i didn't hear abt this controversy until reading this plurk, and then to reiterate what temporalwolf said...if you don't like jrpgs don't play/review them. that was the first thing that came to mind when i read that comment. like why are you even talking abt them? it very much does sound like a publicity stunt tbh. a way to cash in on the remake
yea, I think he does reviews on them to share his opinion on why they're bad but I feel like that breeds a toxic mindset so it is like... a very rough balance
it does. also, if you're opinion is that jrpg's are bad simply bc you don't like the mechanics then you're entitled to that, but you don't have to make a separate review video for every jrpg to state that. you can just make a generic "this is why I THINK jrpg's are bad" video and call it a day. no need to do the remake, octopath, and cthulhu knows what else
Doesn't help some vocal fans wish death threats on those who criticize him, but... fuck me, that's a different story
It just sucks that he makes these reviews that may be satirical but has an air of "No I'm being serious" about them
