but that doesn't stop it from pissing me off by dangling a functional mystery in front of my eyes,

Dangle clues as to its effects and even severity

and then throw it entirely aside for the sake of a hammy love scene

Writers like that need to be stabbed. Mysteries are puzzles. Puzzles are for solving.

Don't chicken out when you can't computate the answer first, and then the question

Don't throw it aside for an "All you need is love" message—that can be done without introducing the puzzle in the first place

Just. Gimme the puzzle. Let me solve it. It's not asking a lot.

But yeah this is the reason I ducked out of Bakemonogatari

Looked like it'd have been a nice puzzle, and it's showy! But. Kinda just...a collection of existential angst tales over a styled mystic backdrop

Which lost my attention. I've tried. Can't make it past Kanbaru.

It's pretty, though! I don't bash it. Just...gimme my puzzle & let me solve it. 8Ia
