Our new foster dog, Chloe is such a little cutie. Her diabetes is a challenge, for sure, but she is still such a sweet dog. Yesterday she went to the vet to get tests for her diabetes then we went to the pet store afterwards and stocked up on more food for her. The employee helping me was very knowledgeable about the types of foods she can have.
Cass
Which kind didja get?
Chiyo
We're learning how to give her insulin, and to pick out the right kind of food for her to eat, and what symptoms mean what in terms of high vs low glucose levels. Vet said she's currently low, so she needs more food and water, and thus more bathroom trips.

Cass
: she's a mini aussie mix of some sort
Cass
Oh I meant the food xD
Chiyo
ahhh
Chiyo
so we're doing a mix of dry kibble from royal canin for diabetics, then we have only 1 can left of the canned food of the same brand
Chiyo
so I went to the pet store looking for more wet food, but I think it's prescription and they don't have it. BUT the employee was talking about freeze dried meat options that are high quality without a bunch of ingredients (that are usually the bad/unhealthy stuff like corn)
Chiyo
turns out if you get the right kinds of that (there's a few brands, all top shelf stuff), mix with water and the dry kibble, then it's a good replacement for the canned wet food. it can also serve as training treats dry.
Chiyo
here's the canned stuff
Chiyo
and the freeze dried alternative

We're supposed to get more snow tomorrow so I wanted to stock up on supplies. Other than these foods she also has her bottle of insulin and some syringes. Shots twice per day. She's a champ and takes the shots well.
Chiyo
Pup did keep hubby up last night though. She needed to go out to use the bathroom a lot, and she keeps needing more water. This is all normal when glucose levels are low, I guess.
Chiyo
We're all still learning how to deal with it. Not giving up yet. She's a cutie and worth all the work.

It’s so strange that dogs need more water with low glucose. In humans high glucose makes us want more water.
Chiyo
Yeah it's weird. Vet told us to feed her twice last night too, 2 hours apart.
Chiyo
And the pup is already in a new home which is confusing and can be scary. She's not feeling well on top of it.
Chiyo
We're in constant contact with the rescue and the vet. Wanna take care of her right.

Aww, poor baby

Wonder if stress also affects dogs glucose like it does humans.
