DP but needed. ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ , ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ needs help with her grandma cat. she is on a renal diet and won't eat the food the vet have her. are there other options?
StupidSexyV⚠der
when you have time Kel, of course
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Hope
Is it wet or dry food?
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
it's wet
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
she's only been eating wet food for a while now since she's a v senior kitty (almost 18) and she couldn't stomach normal dry food without tossing it
lupin
oh, poor thing :-(
lupin
i would ask your vet if there are any other brands or flavors that they might have on hand for you to try. there is bound to be one that she will eat.
lupin
two of our cats were like that (one has since been put down because it was time), but he adjusted to the new food after a while. maybe mix it with their old wet cat food?
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I’m trying that atm, plus adding some low sodium chicken broth to the mix to try and make it seem better?
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
She’s really picky, I’ve gone thru a bunch of regular cat food flavors to try and find some she likes and she’s just...picky
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
And rn I just want her to eat Bc she’s only 6.5 lbs
StupidSexyV⚠der
that's why i wanted Kel because she does this at work
lupin
oh, sorry!
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
It’s okay!!!
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
This is my first time with a kitty with renal problems, and we only found out that’s the problem 2 days ago so I just wanna do the right things for my old girl
StupidSexyV⚠der
lupin : no it's ok! she's just an expert! but experience I'm sure is welcome
lupin
expertise is really good; i am sure she can shed some more light on it.
StupidSexyV⚠der
(heart)
lupin
but in my experience, once a cat gets that old and is experiencing those things, the most you can do is make sure to keep them on that diet and do as your vet advises. making sure they have lots of access to water and keeping an eye out for signs of renal infections helps too.
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
yeah i'm working on trying to transition her; it's just a little stressful rn b/c if she doesn't like something, she just straight up won't eat it, even if she's hungry
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
she's in the early stages of it (i think) since her BUN was 42 and her creatinine was 2.3 (not horrific but not ideal). her weight and appetite concerns me a lot rn tho
StupidSexyV⚠der
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ : btw, not cat related but dog - might help with some of your dog issues?
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
ahaha oh my gracious
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
the dog who needs this the most is grandpa's German Shepherd and he would squawk even more than he does now about being wiped off
StupidSexyV⚠der
damn
StupidSexyV⚠der
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ i don't know if you saw this
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
Lord, I'm sorry. I missed this entirely.
StupidSexyV⚠der
it's ok!
StupidSexyV⚠der
you had stuff going on too
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
The most important thing is that she eats; that's secondary to making sure she eats appropriately.
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
(Appropriately is still important! But! Eating is good, too.)
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Ah hello!!!
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Rn getting her to eat enough is the struggle I am having...frankly....
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
Anything that is high in moisture content and lower in starches/carbs/etc is gonna be good for her.
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
Hello! o/
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
I work in a natural foods market for dogs and cats; lots of training in all sorts of stuff
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
One of the brands I would recommend that we carry is Weruva. They have some great flavours that might appeal to her. The BFF line has a LOT of gravy; the meat is minced really finely and put into gravy.
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
(Sometimes I'm limited in reccing brands by what I have in store, but I can give you some general guidelines to look for.)
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Ohhh... that might be v good for her Bc she likes minced stuff better than the pate but it upsets her stomach... finely minced could maybe help tho...
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
That would be really lovely honestly ;-; rn I’m giving her fancy feast Bc she WILL eat that but I know it’s really not the best for her kidneys
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
It's cool - like I said, eating is important, esp when she's small
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I just got epakitin powder to put in it to help with the phosphorous issue but ideally I would like her on a better diet
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
anyting with a "meal" in the ingredients will have higher phosphorous
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
because that's ground bone
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
so you want meat ingredients and not meal
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
If it gets to a point where you don't know what to do or what she will eat, whole meat baby food is an option
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
tuna (bonito) flakes with a little warm water can be added to food, too, to get her into it, if that helps with palatibility
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
typically you find meals in dry food and pate, so if you find minced food, that's better
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I don’t see “meal” in the fancy feast, the meat, broth, and meat by-products...she does like minced better though.
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I haven’t given her dry food in a while either since she basically tosses it all
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I actually tried to put a little catnip in her food and she wouldn’t have anything to do with it rofl
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I will try some of these things tho ty ;-;
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I’ll look for Weruva when I go to the store next too
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
Try to stay away from by-products - it could up the phosphorous, too, since it has cartilage in it.
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
Weruva tends to be in independent stores and/or feed stores, but you can look at ingredients and get something good, too,.
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
i'll keep looking!!
ᴇʀᴏɢᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
my goal rn is to get at least 2.5 cans of fancy feast in her a day and try to transition to a better food...
StupidSexyV⚠der
good luck
ᛕﻉɭค๓ٱՇץ
good luck! and like I said - eating something is better than nothing at all
