Hi guys, (RJ here) going to put the most positive spin on this that I can, but what do you like about where do you live? There is a chance I won't be where I am next year and if I treat it like an enabling plurk maybe this won't be so terrible.
ಠ_ಠ
Long story short but my spouse just got word his place of employment is shutting down, and with mine only paying under $12/hr maybe it's time we just backup and try somewhere else
ಠ_ಠ
We have nothing tieing us to Michigan anymore. We always thought we couldn't afford anywhere else but if min. wage is higher elsewhere and rent isn't abysmal maybe somewhere else is a better option.
ಠ_ಠ
Anon plurk enabled more for you guys than me, I'll also take PMs too if you wanna send more specific suggestions
olive131
i live in pittsburgh and none of the natural disasters come here
olive131
its awesome
olive131
very liberal city but also very blue collar. a lot of football if you like football.
olive131
good hockey team if you like hockey
olive131
garbage baseball team that you still cant avoid
puma615
+1 to Pittsburgh having a good hockey team
leek155
I lived in Pittsburgh for a good chunk of time, and it's delightful! One downside: it's cloudy and rainy more than the average city.
ಠ_ಠ
oh Yeah? heh MI has an absolutely broken spectrum where it can be bright and sunny, still snow and then start raining all at the same time.
leek155
it kind of kicked my ass as someone with SAD, but I still loved it
ಠ_ಠ
hehe cloudy and rainy is all right, I'm not much for sports but that still sounds nice. I've never lived in a city but I always fancied being able to walk or take public transport somewhere ijnstead of driving
puma615
I'm really sorry about your spouse's workplace. I hope it all works out for you guys. (Don't live where I live though. Rent is horrific.)
ಠ_ಠ
ooof yeah
cream399
I'm sorry to hear that : ( I wish i could advocate for CA but it's so expensive to live here, it's definitely a bad idea. I hope you get some good ideas and tips here from others though!
leek155
I'm not much for sports either, but the enthusiasm is contagious. Everyone is so proud of their teams.
ಠ_ಠ
thank you Puma. We can always try to get better jobs out here too, I just figure its as good a time as any to see if we can't do better since we're just scraping by with our low wages as it is
ಠ_ಠ
hehe yeah, I can get behind that
prawn87
I'm in Portland Oregon. tooooons of RPers up here in the PNW! and i love the people here in general. I've felt more free to be me than in a lot of places I've lived (and I have lived in a lot of states)
ಠ_ಠ
it's okay Cream, my cousin actually offered to let me live with her for cheap in CA but that was if my husband went back to school or had to leave for a job, so thats off the table for now as it would involve me leaving him behind
prawn87
buuut we are a v expensive place to live so. probably not the best option for you :-(
ಠ_ಠ
yeH! That always seemed like a nice place. dare .I ask what rent is like out there?
ಠ_ಠ
yeahhh nope sadly
leek155
what industries are you in / plan to be in?
leek155
that might help narrow it down, too
ಠ_ಠ
I do want to work in storyboarding eventually but in terms of jobs I can do that are immediately hirable I'm great in a warehouse and following orders for manual labor, even working in a cubicle as someone doing data entry is fine to me if it pays well enough
ಠ_ಠ
I've just worked nothing but customer service jobs ever since to my school screwed me over so if I continue down this path with these kinds of wages I'm literally never going to be able to afford anything in life.
cream399
Yeah! since I don't care about giving myself away we talked about that a few days ago. I hope you guys are able to find something better for the both of you so you don't have to worry about something like that.
ಠ_ಠ
My spouse on the other hand can do tech, event coordinating and is great in a team. He doesnt know what he wants to do in life, but he works tirelessly even off the clock and has set up the lights and sound systems for conventions in the Renaissance center and cobo hall
lark255
Im in NYC and same on the "its bitch expensive to live here" but the wages are higher across the board. if youre good with commuting from jersey you can also cut your living price down like CRAZY
ಠ_ಠ
thanks Cream ♡ you're the best
ಠ_ಠ
Oooh Yeah? That's something to consider
lark255
yeah! the commuting time is the same as going from Brooklyn or Queens and comparable in cost for travel but makes your rent supercheap
ಠ_ಠ
Yeah its like, right now we spend roughly $800/month on rent and bills, which is dirt cheap to anywhere else as far as I know, but after my student loans, I have nothing left and no one around here will pay more than 12/hr. He was even management position, like, we were as far up the ladder as we can go.
ಠ_ಠ
How interesting, I'll have to look into that thank you Lark
falcon71
Silicon Valley is a tech place but the rent is hell here (and you probably have figured out who I am from that ahaha)
falcon71
I’ve heard Colorado can be pretty cheap though, surprisingly
ಠ_ಠ
Oooh, one of my spouses favorite places he ever visited was in Colorado, could be nice to live around there
prawn87
oh yeah i looked into living in colorado after I got out of grad school!
prawn87
I'd attended two conferences there and loved the areas while I got to see em
ಠ_ಠ
it always seemed like a very nice place but I figured anywhere pretty or popular was just out of the budget. I'll have to look into it, good suggestions :3 thank you
toast759
Wichita KS has low rent costs, a huge art community, and lots of great restaurants.

A lot of the people suck though.
ಠ_ಠ
heh aww that's a shame. well right now we both work so much we never leave the house to other people exist so hopefully we just wouldnt run into them
mantis35
that's sad to hear, sorry you have to go through that :c i'm in canada so i don't think i'll be much help, but i'll hope for the best for you guys!
ಠ_ಠ
honestly even Canada is not off the table. If its affordable to live there we'll gladly move
ಠ_ಠ
I'm practically in Canada already when I see it from the buildings in Detroit
mantis35
then i will recommend canada for the virtue of being canada
mantis35
we have poutine?
ಠ_ಠ
hehe haven't had it, but it does seem very nice. you also have peanut free chocolate which made my year as a child when I discovered that
ಠ_ಠ
Do you have any idea on cost of living situations? Is there one area like way more expensive than others?
mantis35
i would definitely avoid bigger cities, if you're in michigan then you're close to ontario i think?
mantis35
my geography right ...
ಠ_ಠ
Yessss I believe so? we have A bridge to Canada I'm just not sure what part of it that goes too. That sounds right.
mantis35
i think it's ontario which i'm not the most familiar with because i'm all the way west in bc, but i would definitely avoid toronto and ottawa and the really big cities, you'd have a decent chance of finding work but the living costs are atrocious
ಠ_ಠ
Oooh gotcha, good to know.
mantis35
commuting to work is always an option if you're okay with busy highway traffic
ಠ_ಠ
Yeah like my sister straight up flew to Japan to live (and teaches at) so I really don't have reservations about trying anywhere/a new country (though we'd have to save up a bit for that kind of airfare). It being close to where we are now won't be a problem
ಠ_ಠ
hmmm I see, I admit cars actually scare me, I try to avoid driving if I don't have to (but that being said I've never not had to drive to work before either, so it wouldn't be anything new)
mantis35
toronto highway commute is a scary thing
mantis35
for job stuff there are always options for online working from home jobs, there's some pizza places that will hire at-home call dispatch where you take the orders and send it to their local pizza place, there's transcription work where you take audio logs from doctors or whoever and type it out into a document for them, lots of stuff like that
ಠ_ಠ
Oooh yeah those don't sound so bad. the only work from home jobs out here are like telemarketing, I'd much prefer transcribing. Thanks Mantis, I appreciate the info.

Columbus, OH is pretty good. A lot like Pittsburgh, a pretty liberal town with blue collar running through it and is die hard about its sports, but its smaller so commuting isn't as big of a bitch (i haven't used the public transportation, so i can't offer an opinion about it. affordable housing is general more in the suburbs, but that's where all the
salmon71
warehouses are, like for Express or L Brands or Mars or... what have you. a lot of companies have moved their headquarters here for one reason or another.
ಠ_ಠ
Oh! That's very helpful, thank you Salmon. I never would have expected that
salmon71
ohio in general sucks major ass, but........ i like living in Columbus
ಠ_ಠ
yeahhh I hear a lot about Ohio since it's right next to MI already, but that's good! I'm glad to hear it
ಠ_ಠ
MI probably sucks too but its all I've ever known. I've traveled to other states plenty but this is the only one I ever lived in
ಠ_ಠ
I guess because its so cheap I thought if I couldn't survive here, I may as well have failed everywhere else, but I'm starting to realize there are probably better cost of living situations out there
olive131
can vouch that i went to oregon and literally met 11 RPers that were in the area
olive131
just like, i said "hey im gonna be in seattle for a couple days" and ALL OF THEM RESPONDED "hey i'm close to there!"
olive131
another place ive noticed has a ton of RP people is boston
ಠ_ಠ
God even at Youmacon one of the BIGGEST anime conventions in the states no one has ever even heard of LJ/DW/or rp T^T so THATS WHERE YOU ALL ARE
ಠ_ಠ
hahaha that's great though, I admit most rp friends I tend to meet are in Cali, must just be a more coastal kind of thing?
ಠ_ಠ
It is I. Michigan's only DW rper.
olive131
I have a friend in RP that ..whats the word for a moderator for a convention, i am blanking
olive131
staff!
olive131
staffs at youmacon every year
olive131
but she lives in ohio and commutes
ಠ_ಠ
Oh! no way. I've only done it once or twice but Brian did tech staff so often he became the unofficial liaison between Cobo and Rencen. I got to help him do Mic checks this year.
ಠ_ಠ
Go figure
ಠ_ಠ
that's really cool, depending on what dept we may have never met, but its the closest I've come to meeting an rper in MI yet hehe
