Unpopular Opinion: John Mulaney is so popular on tumblr because he appears unthreatening and his comedy is basically PG 13.

He's an adult man who worked on SNL and had a serious drinking problem - like, I think he's pretty funny, but people are talking about him like he can do no wrong and... I'm sure they'd be surprised, but they shouldn't be?

Right? I love John Mulaney but I’ve found this baffling as well

yeah the surge of popularity he's recently experienced on tumblr is really weird to me as someone who (hipster hat) liked him before the last several months

but as we know, tumblr in general has a big problem with trying to force people, both imagined and real, to comply with whatever paradigm they've decided on for them

and my sense is a large subset of tumblr has decided that mulaney should be their smol soft boi du jour

because he is genuinely funny and tumblr as a population often struggles heavily with the concept of splitting

tldr i don't know that this opinion is unpopular at all lmao

but trust me, there's already been a handful of callout/your fave is problematic posts about some of his older (lmao christ, "older") jokes, like his "playfully anti-semitic" bit about his wife

Yeah, I saw those callouts, and they're even worse than the boi du jour shit - but they're always a reaction to the first thing

Like, the callouts are incredibly dumb.

But nobody seems to be able to deal with stars as human beings.

Like, he's a normal guy. But my unpopular take should be a normal one with adults.

Just that - he's nothing really all that special. He's pretty funny, and he's probably a pretty nice guy!

As another person in their mid 30's who struggled with drinkin' too much, like - I would be uncomfortable if people cast me as unproblematic like that!

I'm pretty nice, I do my best, but I've fucked up pretty badly in my life, too.

But my opinion is explicitly like - I don't think people like him because he's funny, I think they just like him because he looks like their idea of a nonthreatening man.
