I've now officially signed on as an employee of a Quebec-based software firm, starting in September with my role being UX/screen design/front end development.

This means I'm leaving my existing business (partner will take over) and I won't be working one-on-one with clients anymore. Many people feel "The Dream" is to be your own boss, but I was starting to really feel burn out and the company simply wasn't growing. I was doing more work for less money while everything got more and more expensive.

Sounds really interesting, congratulations!

Partly this was due to a sluggish economy and bad area to base work out of (Vancouver's economic activity is tied up in tourism, services industries, and real estate, none of which were really our target market) and partly due to insanely high cost of living/office overhead in this city. DIY things like WIX and services like fiverr also devalued what I do.

It was time for a change, time to work at paying off some of my crazy debt load. I will finally have things like actual vacations (paid time off), any kind of health insurance at all, disposable income of any kind at all (!!!). And because the Quebec IT firm has a lot of different clients with different needs, the work should still be varied and challenging.

So I'm looking forward to trying new things. I've been freelancing with them for about 6 months now and they've really come around to seeing how important/useful my work is It is nice to be valued!

I run a small studio that provides branding and web/digital solutions. In theory we do a lot of design. In reality I spent all my time coding and dealing with clients. Hence the burn out.

That's awesome! Are you gonna relocate, or can you do the job remotely?!
Alaska
Remote for now, but who knows what the future will bring.
