[rpmeta] power balancing is tragically sometimes necessary but it also sometimes makes certain characters hard to play
Gabiluzbad
Superman, for example
Gabiluzbad
You certainly COULD play unpowered Clark and get some interesting threads and CR out of that
Gabiluzbad
But I think for most people, if they’re apping Superman it’s because they want to fly around and be the unstoppable last son of Krypton
Gabiluzbad
But while I’m sure most people could be trusted not to be a dick about having IC power over other characters
Gabiluzbad
All it would take is one dick to stir up some nasty drama
Gabiluzbad
“Eric literally every DWRPer already knows this” yeah I know
Quinneapolis
this is why I never made a journal for Beerus
Gabiluzbad
Just sayin’
Quinneapolis
it would be bad to play him at his usual canon power dynamics, but without them he's not the same weird cat
Gabiluzbad
Beerus, as I understand it, fights and beats Goku without really trying
Gabiluzbad
Right?
Quinneapolis
hand waggle
Quinneapolis
something like that
Gabiluzbad
But then decides to spare the Earth because we have good food
Quinneapolis
yeah
Lord Nick
One of my RP dreams is still to play Saitama somewhere without any nerfing but then just never let him do anything.
Dragomorph
Kitaro and his "shounen hero hax" has the same problem for me a lot of times because he's just. So impossible. To kill.
Gabiluzbad
Yeah
Gabiluzbad
You can deal with an immortal
Gabiluzbad
You can't deal with someone who can blow up a planet with his eyelashes
MaxSalsa
I occasionally have the opposite problem - I want to play unpowered characters, but then I end up with powers after all. It's a word dichotomy and I'm not sure how to make everyone happy... Other than "you don't".
Gabiluzbad
YEAH ACTUALLY that's another thing that annoys me sometimes
Gabiluzbad
When games make it super easy to learn new skills
Gabiluzbad
Like I've been in for like...2 weeks?
Gabiluzbad
I could have already taught Lin magic
Gabiluzbad
Giving character access to amazing superpowers can kind of violently change them just as much as taking away their powers can
MaxSalsa
I've got a Precure civilian in and she's already got wind magic, a bow and arrow she magically summons, and now explosions? So yeah, I get that.
𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿!
I think i'd argue that this isn't as much of an issue with the access to new skills and powers as it is how players choose to interact with it
𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿!
if you're forced to gain new powers, i see how that could be a problem, but in a game where that's just an option provided by the mechanics, i feel like it's up to the player to be restrained and aware of what could potentially derail their character, but also the mods to... well, moderate that sort of thing
MaxSalsa
PC is kind of the former - you're given new powers in the form of cards which are not entirely player chosen, but are invoked to use on demand. But I've also played in the latter, so I do understand that divide.
Gabiluzbad
superorbital: I certainly am not forced to pick up new powers if I dont' want to and I appreciate that
Gabiluzbad
I probably wouldn't have joined the game if I had been REQUIRED to pick up new abilities
Gabiluzbad
As is, I can blow all my points on stupid crap
Gabiluzbad
And I fully intend to!
FʀᴏᴍTʜᴇFɪʀᴇ
For what it's worth, developing new powers was a focus concept of phanrift from inception, also
FʀᴏᴍTʜᴇFɪʀᴇ
The game is, among other things, a product of my frustration at games that make it impossible for characters to learn skills other than what they came in with
FʀᴏᴍTʜᴇFɪʀᴇ
I respect that it's not everyone's thing! But it's my thing and thus I intentionally made a system where it's easy to do
