Because of the relationship Vader missed out on having with his own children, and because family was always the most important thing to him, he'd probably kind of fixate on his grandson

probably because Vader's health was already beginning to deteriorate pretty badly and he knew he didn't have much time left either way, so he wanted to be sure Ben would be safe once he was gone

in this AU, that would also have been the year Han gifted Ben the Falcon, and he decided to deal with his grief by going off with Chewie on a quest to find all the parts he needed to fully restore it

(which he could've just ordered off the holonet and had delivered to Coruscant like a normal person, but going bargain hunting in the far corners of the galaxy is more fun)
