He does like winning at things, but he also always feels like there's Work To Do and if he doesn't have the plausible excuse of doing-stuff-with-my-team-is-important, I figure he has trouble sticking with anything that amounts to a leisure activity.
I think she planned on him quitting the team after realizing he wasn't mentally mature enough for this stuff, but that just means he needs more stuff to fill his time.
