[work] Well, its almost March so I think its time I give the work explanation! Unless kataranisword wishes to because he's heard me talk about it so many times he probably mumbles it in his sleep
Papirini
SO. I changed my screen name to hell march and the reason is, for me, it is HELL MARCH
Papirini
As in, March is a very, very, very, very long month for me
Papirini
Some of you may remember, especially if you're newer to my plurk, back in January and earlier this month when I stayed at work for 12-15 hours at a clip
Papirini
But see, that is nothing compared to March
Papirini
I work for the New York State Legislature - more specifically, the Legislative Bill Drafting Commission, or LBDC
Papirini
Our job is to oversee the drafting of legislative business, the bulk of which is legislative bills and laws
Papirini
From inception to enactment/signature by the governor, or just from inception to "let it die in committee", no matter what destiny the bill has, we are the ones who the government has create the bills for them
Papirini
We create them, we check to make sure we are doing proper bill precedent and also amending the correct law, then its typed, proofread, and sent out for various revisions until its prepared for bill introduction
Papirini
And this process is repeated until the bill is signed into law, or the bi-annual session ends and its re-filed by the lawmakers
Papirini
In my case, I'm in the proofreaders/comparers unit, so everything I do is proofreading bills
Papirini
But comparers are super special in that unlike everyone else, our job doesn't end when the bill is signed into law
Papirini
We also have to proofread publishers' lawbooks because we certify all NYS law books - if its not certified as having been proofread for accuracy by us, its not a legal copy
Papirini
So, what does this have to do with March, you ask?
Papirini
Well, April 1st is the beginning of the New York fiscal year, so our budget has to be in by then
Papirini
We proofread budget also
Papirini
And as long as the lawmakers are in session or in committee hashing out budget compromises and details because no one can ever agree on the budget
Papirini
We have to stay
Papirini
So we will be seeing nights where I get out at 4, 5, 6 am
Papirini
A 9am-9am shift happens
Papirini
Its part of my job
Papirini
And this will be all month long
Papirini
Every Monday and Wednesday and every weekend until budget is done
Papirini
Last year, as an example, I got 90 hours of comp time
Papirini
Because we do not get paid overtime, we just get comp time
Papirini
Now, because we are there for hours, it also means we tend to also get hours on hours of doing nothing
Papirini
So I can be there from -95, a normal day, and be sitting until 3am before anything substantive comes to my desk
Queen Bun
what's comp time?
Papirini
Basically, its paid time off
Papirini
Unlike the lawmakers, we don't get any extra
Papirini
So if we take a day off, we don't get paid any more than if we'd stayed at work
Papirini
Whereas lawmakers get time and a half and meal checks
Papirini
So, if you see me on a random Wednesday night this coming month, going "17 hours" at 2am while tagging, its because I'm at work
Papirini
Or just saying weirder things than normal
Papirini
I also have a side project this year: making a comprehensible set of Turkish Star Wars subtitles
Papirini
I've managed to get about more than halfway through from the long hours I did in January and February so there's that I suppose
Papirini
I'm also going to draw more because I will have plenty of time at midnight when nothing's happening and I can't sleep so
Papirini
Its also why I asked for show/movie suggestions because
Papirini
I will be at my desk for a while
Queen Bun
oh my. I know just enough about TSW that that sounds like fun
Papirini
Spoilers: even with me clearing things up based on the translation I'm using, its still a terrible plot
ArgentBast
Oh gawd.
ArgentBast
Good luck, Ni!
BERSERKER
OH IS IT HELL MONTH #1 ALREADY
Queen Bun
yep
BERSERKER
(Disclaimer, there is also a hell month #2 and that is in...October, I believe?)
Papirini
(June, actually!)
