Mouldy Apple
I lost control of my own plurk to a discussion that's better than what I had to offer anyway but I STILL WANNA TALK ABOUT THE THING so a brief plurk about Thalassa Gramarye.
Mouldy Apple
Specifically, how nebulous her character is
Mouldy Apple
And it's because even though we physically interact with her throughout an entire trial
Mouldy Apple
We really only know her through her reltionship to other characters
Mouldy Apple
Which makes her iNCREDIBLY AGGRAVATING to define because she's always "Machi's legal guardian(?)/best friend" or "Trucy's mother" or what-have-you
Dᴇᴠɪʟs Tʀɪᴀɴɢʟᴇ
i'm sorry for taking over your plurk OTL
Mouldy Apple
Every conversation you have with her as Lamiroir is about Machi, and even those don't tell you much about their relationship besides "I view him as my own son"
Mouldy Apple
Dᴇᴠɪʟs Tʀɪᴀɴɢʟᴇ : nO your discussion is... honestly 100% legit and I'm spectating it over in another tab, haha
Mouldy Apple
I just don't want to interrupt it, so I made a different plurk to talk about my original topic
Mouldy Apple
And, like. She lies to protect him once, but the entire end of AJ is such a mess that we never REALLY find out how their relationship works, let alone how it works (or if it does) post-Lamiroir
Mouldy Apple
So we get the idea that Thalassa is supposed to be a very warm, loving figure, but we only really ever get her SAYING she loves various people, but never.... acting it out on screen except for the
Mouldy Apple
Brief moment where she protects Machi by lying.
Mouldy Apple
The main thing I got out of Turnabout Serenade about their relationship is that she kind of.... IDK how to describe it. She treats Machi like he's younger than fourteen on several occasions.
Mouldy Apple
And some of it can be cover-up, like her concern about him leaving the dressing room alone
Mouldy Apple
Which would obviously also leave HER alone, and she's actually blind and not supposed to be, so y'know
Mouldy Apple
But a lot of it is just... she seems so baffled and powerless when he clams up that one time. "He won't tell me."
Mouldy Apple
Powerless isn't the word I want
Mouldy Apple
But
Mouldy Apple
She just seems to have no idea what to do.
Mouldy Apple
And I realise part of it is likely that she's not actually Machi's parent--they've never really had to negotiate this kind of situation before, and she probably has no idea what to do about it
Mouldy Apple
But it's part of what makes me hesitant to refer to her entirely as Machi's parental figure.
Mouldy Apple
In terms of actual parental work, she raised Trucy for a handful of years, then found Machi (or Machi found her) in Borginia with no memory of Trucy at all.
Mouldy Apple
Which... I don't think she was a parent so much as a parental surrogate, if that makes any sense.
Mouldy Apple
But does that make Machi a surrogate child? What does that mean in regards to them now?
Mouldy Apple
I'm aggravated because I can't even extrapolate on this without making some huge assumptions. Because Lamiroir--Thalassa, whatever... like I said, we only ever see her through the filter of her reltionships.
Mouldy Apple
wHICH IS WHY I NEVER KNOW HOW TO PLAY MACHI'S FEELINGS ON THE MATTER the end
