This is fascinating. And she is just gorgeous. The beauty contest winner making Japan look at itself - BBC News

Foggy
I saw that!!

Gingo!
what a victory for reason over prejudice!

Tehanu
So cool! I have hafu cousins.

Tehanu
Also, she is so beautiful!

Tillerz
The article says "there is no world like the japanese hafu"... isn't that wrong? Works like that often are taking from the english original, and the u is just added in japanese.

Tillerz
I have seen that several times already.

Tillerz
Like "firumu" for a (camera) film.

Tillerz
And yup, she looks pretty good.

Stereo Nacht
There are definitely other words in other languages like "hafu"- if she means words that means "born of parents of different ancestry", from politically-correct to insulting.

Magda K
She may just not be familiar with terms like hapa and biracial.

: She means with the cultural context behind it, not the fact that it's a loanword. "Biracial" doesn't feel much, does it? I confess I'm not familiar with "hapa".

Tanarian
Take a look at, of all things, Ouran High School Host Club, and that gives a subtle feeling for the weight of "hafu" as well.

Tanarian
she looks rather like someone from the southern islands, with that pretty skintone.

Darla 🌙 Swan
Wow, she is gorgeous! Reminds me a little of Alicia Keys.

Tehanu
Courageous, too. It can't be easy to stand up and stand out in a largely homogenous culture.

Corgi
As I understand it, Japanese culture tends to be fond of hammering down the uneven nailheads.

Stereo Nacht
Corgi
: Not entirely true: if you over perform, you are celebrated; if you underperform, you are excluded. Disabilities are a shame...

Tehanu
: It isn't like she had much of a choice. She mentions a friend who killed himself in one interview. She was never going to be able to just blend in, glad she chose to use her uniqueness to her advantage

Snowy Stella
Teen suicides are so fuckin' common in Japan too. The societal attitude, esp towards teenagers, is so fuckin toxic and abusive. Being mixed would just exacerbate that. Good for her for surviving and thriving.

Foggy
I still remember the airlifts of all the half-Vietnamese kids who were left behind after the US pulled out. Kids who were never going to fit in, and whose mothers were abandoned there.

Foggy
Not "all" as in all of them - I meant many of them.

Malthaussen
Well, if you're looking for words which mean "parents of different racial backgrounds" that are also insulting, there's always metis. At least it was used to be insulting to my brother, who has Penobscot and

Malthaussen
French parents...

Stereo Nacht
Metis, mulatto, half-blood... I am sure there are more, and in almost every language!

dkronfeld
Metis is absolutely not an insulting term around here. MNBC Métis Nation BC
