Go, Dede!!
Hilda
Bibs?
Dede
Hilda : bibliographic record. Each book has one. The ones I am working on didn't have subject headings assigned when they were first added to our catalog. SOOOOO this past year I've been researching
Dede
and adding correct Library of Congress subject headings to each bib record which is specific to each book :-) Then I enter them digitally onto the existing record in our catalog AND in the OCLC database which
Dede
what WorldCat.org: The World's Largest Library Catalog "runs" from. It's time consuming, boring and the boss kinda' assumed that I'd throw fits about doing it. Seems she just can't get rid of me. :-)
Dede
Dede
almost 1000 of them :-) and most likely 2000 headings, each typed into 2 databases. UGH.
Hilda
Ah...I wasn't familiar with the term :-)
Dede
Hilda : sorry for blathering on
MaryTeodosio
Dede when I did work-study at the TAMU library I worked in Bibliographic Records dept. :-D We were moving the whole catalog onto a computer database so each card had to be entered :-D

I wish you could come work for us and do that, Dede. Our catalogers stopped putting in subject headings and we just take whatever record someone else made.
Alanna
The subject headings are really important for finding appropriate material. We're spending a LOT for a new catalog, but the subject headings are still going to suck.
Dede
Alanna : no, you don't want me to do it! This whole thing started because the dissertations/theses had no SH so that was my task. Basically I'm assigned the easiest SH known to man LOL
Alanna
That's better than none!
