Bippy
Pig dissections today... one of the students is vegetarian and close to freaking out.

Once when I was in high school there was a biology class that was going to watch a python eat a rabbit and someone in the class ran to the front and grabbed the rabbit and ran to the office
wooper
Gdhshsjfgs
Caerbannog
I would have applauded the kid who grabbed the rabbit. Or I would have done it myself
Kbity
snakes need to eat too :-(
Caerbannog
Not live animals. Not in front of a bunch of students
Caerbannog
Frozen is safer for snakes
Kbity
that is true.
colorful bunch
oh man we used to feed goldfish to the bitty little snakes in 7th grade and we'd fight over who got to do it
colorful bunch
dissecting cats in high school was fun because, after we'd done it a few days and after going through the process of naming all the cats,
colorful bunch
they disappeared and we had nothing to do for a period
colorful bunch
(it's because we kept them in big trash cans but apparently one of the custodians didn't realize this and must've tossed them all)
colorful bunch
sharks and cats in college were fun, but sharks get less fun when you are saving them to slowly dissect and study off of...over the course of a semester. puuuungent
Caerbannog
Sorry, I should mention that I'm a bunny owner here, so i'm biased :/
Caerbannog
But I think it's not necessary to dissect in high school when there are computer models available
Bippy
computer models can only show so much and things look differently in real life than in idealized models.
Bippy
A mix is really great though.
colorful bunch
we always allowed people to go do computer models in high school if they wanted. we did that for the frogs in middle school, and we probably did that for the cats idk
Bippy
I'm from before computer models were a thing. /sob
Bippy
I studied comparative anatomy ... I've dissected so many things.
colorful bunch
I'm so sad I don't remember what we named our cat and shark in college, but in high school our cat had some awesome russian royalty sounding name
Lel
I was homeschooled but also lived on a farm, so our high school biology was butchering our animals
Lel
not fun
ChasingAGhost
In school, I got to dissect frogs, earthworms, and fish. (The fish were because my school was cheap and got people to donate their catches from fishing to us.)
ChasingAGhost
I knew how to clean fish, so I got to be in one of the groups assigned a bullhead. It made things... Exciting.
Caerbannog
I think, though, that for high school? Computer models are fine. If they're going on to a medical profession, then they can dissect
Caerbannog
I dissected a pig, frog, cat, worm, and cow eye. I still don't think it was necessary :/
Caerbannog
I went to the school counselor about the cat. Was roundly told do it or you'll get an F. I was getting a high A at the time
Caerbannog
STILL pissed, lol
Bippy
I didn't think I was going to go onto science until I did the dissections though...
ChasingAGhost
Do it or you get an F is such bullshit
Bippy
and yeah... that is bullshit.
Caerbannog
Ikr?
ChasingAGhost
My brother can't deal with blood without fainting. You going to flunk someone for fainting in class?
Caerbannog
I dunno. I just think there should be a opt out
Caerbannog
*an
Caerbannog
Exactly!
Bippy
There isn't any blood though... body fluids are removed when the body is preserved.
Caerbannog
Semantics. It was still unpleasant
Caerbannog
This is why I studied anthropology. Dry bones! (LOL)
Bippy
:-D
Caerbannog
(heart)
ChasingAGhost
Actually? My school didn't use all preserved animals.
ChasingAGhost
But regardless, it's not something you should have to do in general education like high school, outside maybe AP stuff. Which is opt in
