September the 11th of 1714 is the day Barcelona was defeated on the War of the Spanish Succession after years of siege to the city

So it'll be 300 years this year and we're pushing for independence (kind of) so it'll be exciting this year!

For those who don't know a little history: when Charles II (who was a weakling, always sick and sterile, inbreeding does that to you) died with no heir there were two claims to the Spanish throne

On one side we have Philip V, french Bourbon who was the actual heir as named by Charles II

But see you have the house of Spain who still had hell of a territory for a while and France, who was also pretty powerful so the rest of Europe was like haha no too much power in one hand

So The Grand Alliance wanted a Habsburg in the throne and named the Archduke Charles

What does Barcelona/Catalonia have to do with his? Well, the Bourbons have always been famous for CENTRALISM!!! and we hate that

and since the Borbouns would have their house in Madrid we knew we'd be fucked so we mainly gave our support to Charles along with the Grand Alliance (I have no idea how many countries formed it oops)

so yep you have a pretty nasty war all over Spain's territory

BUT!!! Suddenly Charles's older brother died and Charles finds himself becoming Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI

So the grand alliance decides they are out, because at this point they'd be choosing between a Franco-Spanish alliance or an Austro-Spanish one, too much power either way

And they pull most (if not all) of their forces deciding whatever. So slowly but surely everyone's accepting Philip as their king

EXCEPT US because we still knew pretty well we'd be fucked so the little Catalans that could keep on fighting and fighting and obviously loosing territory

to the point where we're the only ones fighting because DEATH TO THE BOURBONS. And that one September the 11th, Barcelona admitted defeat

We signed the treaty of Utrecht to admit Philip as Philip V of Spain (incidentally we just got to Philip VI, coincidence???)

thing is Philip wasn't dumb, and he knew Catalonia was still pretty hostile territory

so he made the Nueva Planta decrees

The Nueva Planta decrees are... pretty horrible to us. It basically means we accept the French way of living, giving up ALL our govern, institutions, culture... and even language

basically he made all of Spain in one, like the Catalans knew he would already, and since they had fought till the end he made it specially clear to them they were just another part of Spain and had to behave_

Fun fact: my mom is catalan but my father is from sevilla, so anytime things like these are brought up he suddenly becomes small and quiet and slides away

those ruins up there? they found them under a biiig marketplace, El Born

they were bombarded during the siege but then they built on top and they have been really well conserved

ok sad fact: Philip, again, knew we'd be hostile and that he had to keep a close eye on us

so he built a citadel right next to the city, called la ciutadella

except he forced people living at the edges of the city, thousands of them, to destroy their houses so they could use their rocks and such to build the citadel

so we had a big chunk of the city destroyed (and the rest of the city paying for that tbh) to build something to attack us, just in case

what did we do? build a neighborhood on the other side of it called la barceloneta (little barcelona) because fuck you Bourbons that's why

and the citadel that was supposed to be next to us, watching over us, was suddenly surrounded and engulfed by the city. AND THAT'S IT WOW IT'S HISTORY TIME WITH AL TODAY.
