I despair of my mattress
skerple
it was really nice, when it was new
skerple
but now it's starting to sag in the middle and it feels like it's getting harder every night to find a comfortable position
skerple
I've rotated it twice
rock that bird
fwiw, when I was on my mattress journey a few months ago, I ran into a mini mattress wedge industry with shit like this: https://www.amazon.com/...
skerple
GASP......
rock that bird
it could be worth trying something of that sort if you're not ready to pull the trigger on a new mattress yet. getting a more supportive frame can also help depending on what kind of mattress it is :|a
skerple
it's a Titan pocket coil twin mattress from Brooklyn Bedding
skerple
https://brooklynbedding.com/... one'a these
rock that bird
hmmm!! what is the frame you have it on? one of the ones they sell there or your own?
skerple
I have a pretty basic bedframe, with a fairly hefty set of wood planks on top of it
rock that bird
are the planks 3" or less apart? having planks farther apart can make the mattress break down faster or be less supportive generally
skerple
they SHOULD be... they might have shifted, one problem with this mattress is that it's heavy as fuck and thus really hard to get onto the frame without pushing the planks
rock that bird
YEAH I needed my brother's help to wrestle with mine
skerple
the bed's in a corner too so lol
rock that bird
it sounds like making sure the planks are evenly spaced, maybe adding a bunkie board, or a wedge might be your best bet, but also I think Brooklyn Bedding stuff comes with a 10-year warranty
skerple
the planks were supposed to function as a bunkie board
but yeah I forgot the warranty is that long, I might contact them
rock that bird
DO IT. DESTROY ALL SHITTY MATTRESSES
skerple
I've also toyed with the idea of like. okay my slats run lengthwise, and are only connected to each other with fabric straps, so the overall structure is not rigid
skerple
I've considered just gluing spacers in between them to fix that
rock that bird
...oooohhh noooo
rock that bird
slats running lengthwise, does that mean like, they go from the head of the bed to the foot? that seems to me like it'd DEFINITELY be more subject to bowing in the middle
skerple
.... fuck, really
skerple
I thought widthwise slats would be more at risk of that...
rock that bird
I'm pretty sure -- it's kind of a question of the longer the length of unsupported wood is
rock that bird
like, a sturdy board that only needs to support a weight over 3 feet with supports only on the side, is going to have a lot less work to do in the middle than a sturdy board that needs to support that weight over a full 6 feet without extra props in the middle
skerple
I chose long ones because my bedframe has fairly wide horizontal supports and very thin vertical ones
skerple
dammit that makes sense....
rock that bird
if your bedframe has wide horizontal supports that does help a lot and maybe changes the equation but :|a
rock that bird
how possible is it for you to haul the mattress off the bed and fuck with the frame? it might be worth getting a new one and seeing if that helps before contacting them about the warranty, if nothing else that would let you feel super secure about putting a new mattress in there
skerple
it's possible-ish, but right now I don't really have a good spot to lean the mattress while I fuck with the frame
skerple
god I hate handling this mattress because not only is it super heavy there's no HANDLES ON THE SIDES
skerple
nothing to grab onto! not a single unobtrusive cloth strap!
rock that bird
BOO :[
skerple
I think what I might do is like. after I clear a spot to put my mattress temporarily. take pictures of my frame and slats, and then go to one of their showrooms like hey. help
skerple
and possibly sample other mattresses while I'm there.
rock that bird
yeah. fwiw they will probably tell you to buy their branded foundation so you might want to decide if you are willing to make that purchase before you go. i can give you recs for the frame and metal box spring I decided to use if you want an alternative there. also, putting the wedge underneath might distribute the weight better on its own--
rock that bird
but that would probably be warranty breaking so that's a fuck-it option
rock that bird
https://titanmattress.com/...
skerple
yeah i was looking at their foundations, the high rise frame looks very similar to my current one
skerple
this is all largely Future Theoretical of course I'll need to be several paychecks deep in a new job before I can even like, reasonably plan anything
rock that bird
hmmm. if your current frame has good center support like that one does, it might just be your mattress nearing the end of its life, sadly
rock that bird
in which case investigating whether that's covered under warranty or at last ditch the $30 wedge might be your best options lol
skerple
yeah... lol
RobotApocalypse
rock that bird
: oh i'm having the same issue, thank you so much for linking this support thing, i didn't even know this was a thing
rock that bird
you're welcome! i became radicalized against sleeping on a bad mattress after spending 3 nights in an airbnb a couple months ago
RobotApocalypse
lmao yeah.... i had sciatica from a bad mattress before so i also feel strongly about it
RobotApocalypse
my current mattress is 10 years old now and i just don't have it in the budget to replace it yet, i'm holding out for next year's tax return
rock that bird
I WILL SAY that I have not at all regretted my $180 box mattress. but I did a lot of research on what combination of frame etc. would give me the best chances with it, so because I had to buy those new it did end up being like $600 total, even if I'll be able to replace the mattress for super cheap in the future and reuse the rest
rock that bird
better than the ones they advertise for $1200 though hhh
rock that bird
IT'S WORTH GETTING REALLY UNHINGED ABOUT MATTRESS RESEARCH WHEN YOU GET THE TAX RETURN
RobotApocalypse
honestly yeah lmao
RobotApocalypse
planning to fire up the ol' college report research skills
