and it doesn't actively hurt

but it does protest against many activities

most notably if I have to use it to pick up something with any particular weight

most particularly: we use one of these for cat kibble

it's large enough that I have to extend my thumb to grip it, and my thumb doesn't like that much

does it perchance hurt if you make a fist, tuck your thumb under your index finger, and tilt your hand away from you?
