Plant people of plurk what do i need to do to care for a hydrangea like this? https://images.plurk.com/2Mz1asTWpLS2NXuv3XCi3R.jpg
StellaSemaphore
nothing. I don't do anything to it.
marissa
Ditto. It looks nice.
Heather/Sanura🦩
that's not mine just outside at the mall. I wanna get one for my yard.
Amber
so if you want the blue hydragea blossoms, you need to add something to the soil, I can't remember
Amber
but if you don't, you get whatever pink/purple it wants to put out
Amber
the only way I have killed hydrangea is by not watering them enough
Amber
esp when they are small, once they get big they are really hardy
Amber
they don't LOVE full sun, so find a place that has afternoon shade, esp I think you are in a hotter climate
Heather/Sanura🦩
Amber : idc about color. I just want the pretty big blossoms. do I need to do anything special when planting?
Amber
that has a good section for planting them :-) I had to look up what kind of hydrangea this is :-)
apple
My exes mom was a freaking hydrangea queen. She had a few of hers entered into the contest
Heather/Sanura🦩
Amber : thank you so much. There is so much info out there it is like drinking from a firehose
Heather/Sanura🦩
apple : oooh very cool
apple
Heather/Sanura🦩 : if you do get some and wanna goof with the changing colors, let me know. I've still got a lil notebook of the stuff she taught me and I'll scan and send it to you <3
Dovelove
They're picky ass bitchy babies for the first year or two...they will wilt and look dead every day but just give a little water and make sure you plant in partial shade. Once they get established they'll be fine and like others said you can play with soil acidity to change colors
Dovelove
Also if you buy from big box or mass importer plant resellers...just look for the healthiest looking plant..
Not the one with pretty colors because the colors don't matter really. (Unless they're straight white or lime...some types don't change color)...don't go for bright blue or deep pink or whatever because that stuff can be manipulated.
Heather/Sanura🦩
apple : oh I'd love that if I get some thank you.
Heather/Sanura🦩
Dovelove : oh darn i wanted them in mostly full sun out in the center of our yard.
Dovelove
there are some types that can handle more sun but generally they like partial shade
Dovelove
I want to say the lime variety do
Dovelove
which is why so many landscaping firms use them over the other blue/pink types.
Heather/Sanura🦩
Dovelove : That is a bummer, but Mr. Paw just said that area does get some shade so maybe
Dovelove
That one in you picture could be the limelight type..they have some that come with a bit of color
Dovelove
Looks like it's in a pretty sunny spot so maybe get that kind and try it
Dovelove
If you don't mind them being full white we have a bush out here that's similar...not sure the real name but we just call them snow ball bush and I see them in full sun all the time. They get loaded with big pretty white balls
Heather/Sanura🦩
I just want lots of big blossoms. I'm not too fussed on the color tbh. I'd love purplepink but if just white is what I can get I'd be happy with lush blossoms.
Heather/Sanura🦩
what do they smell like? are they strong?
Dovelove
No mine don't...if you mean hydrangeas.
Dovelove
I never smell mine actually.
Heather/Sanura🦩
I always see them in people's yards or at the mall so I never stopped to smell them.
StellaSemaphore
Dove is right about them looking like ass for the first two years. Can confirm mine took almost 10 years to look nice lol
StellaSemaphore
and I also have never smelled them
marissa
Mine are white and lime but mostly white. They look awful because they are so big and waterlogged down https://images.plurk.com/29TLztmPzSHmu4Be6HnR18.jpg https://images.plurk.com/5wDLHW3c8UxhytzD5MYpB7.jpg Mine from earlier in the season.
marissa
Little babies early summer
