[Generative AI]
I'm not surprised Google is doing this, but I am enraged and disappointed

ugh

Ziri✖O
Well this isn't super upsetting and frustrating at aLL /sarcasm

Exacerangutan
eugh

magicalmemories
Waiting for lawsuits over this.

Exacerangutan
idk, I mean if they specifically target the least-monetized 2% or whatever then it's gonna be hard to hit them with anything, unless we suddenly have actually sane copyright laws that actually protect creators instead of investors

Exacerangutan
if they burglarize their most monetized users then yeah that could get ugly, but if someone's not monetized it's a lot harder to show anything "of value" was stolen since <insert a whole other soapbox about people failing to distinguish between economics and accounting>

Exacerangutan
which if you want to get really dystopian means they're incentivized to demonetize people whose work they want to steal

Exacerangutan
which you need a pretty screwed up system to even be able to say meaningfully

pastel ranma
Exacerangutan
: See the issue there is it might be a situation that the least monetized stuff could have copyrighted content from larger entities

Exacerangutan
don't get me wrong, I would love it if they're so stupid and clumsy about it that their AI accidentally starts spitting out Mickey Mouse and they can't stop it before Disney rolls up with a nailbat

Exacerangutan
that would definitely be on my "funniest ways this stupid thing could go" list

pastel ranma
The problem, as it always occurs with AI is it dredges more info than the human beings behind it can process and vet

pastel ranma
So even in the amoral framework they have plenty of issues making sure it doesn't spit out something that'll get them in legal hot water.

Exacerangutan
...have there been courts actually ruling that AI so much as being exposed to copyrighted work represents copyright infringement?

Exacerangutan
as far as I've heard, at least, the farthest they've gone has been to say that AI generated work can't be copyrighted

pastel ranma
Exacerangutan
: Check out the EU AI Act, basically unless there's a legal exception you need permission from the copyright holder.

Exacerangutan
sounds like at least the EU's taking it kind of seriously

pastel ranma
For anyone curious:
Artificial Intelligence Act - Wikipedia

magicalmemories
Yeah I was considering places like the EU too.

Pteryx
A factor worth considering here: apparently once someone made a YouTube wardialer to see what the most common typical usage of YouTube was, and it turned out that the majority of what's there isn't the kind of stuff we typically watch or might get monetized, but leftovers of using it as infrastructure.

Pteryx
So they're not just training on people's creative work, but on people's local government town hall VODs and small business meetings the like. Which seems like an invasion of privacy...

Pteryx
and the like, even.

MindEvaporator
Im not surprised like google was the first to pioneer this with the captcha systems to train their own shitty neural networks before ai hit the broader markets

MindEvaporator
(yes that's right we've all been working as unpaid labor for google)

pastel ranma
Oh hey something relevant has come up
Disney Files Landmark Case Against AI Image Generato...

Exacerangutan
oho

MindEvaporator
hmmm i dont like that. like I dont like ai but this screams 'sonnt bono law but worse'

MindEvaporator
*sonny bono law

Pteryx
Yeah, the state of copyright law was already bad enough that it was one of the first things pushing me away from wanting to participate in capitalism at all at a rather young age.

Pteryx
I don't want the end result of "AI" copyright infringement to be that corporations have even more of an unfair advantage in the system because that lets them fight each other better and trample the "peasants" underfoot.

𝖙𝖔𝖕 𝖉𝖔𝖌❄️
disney has a good case since AI companies openly admit to scraping copyrighted material, and they can demonstrate that the machine is replicating their IP identically, for money, using that very IP

𝖙𝖔𝖕 𝖉𝖔𝖌❄️
they're gonna settle and bankrupt these guys

StupidSexyV⚠der
Yeah that
