Character dads/characters as dads.

Biologically speaking, Bel and Ilphyl have different fathers. Ilphyl is the son of their mother's consort, Bel is not, because their mother was testing the theory of 'I had two sons in a row, maybe it was my consort's fault'. Drow society is matriarchal enough that one's bio-dad's identity is largely only relevant for avoiding inbreeding.
Becca Stareyes
Honestly, said consort wasn't much of a dad to any of the kids; general consensus was that he existed to keep Bel and Ilphyl's mother entertained. The closest thing Bel had to a father-figure was his maternal uncle, who died shortly before Ilphyl was born. The closest thing Ilphyl had to a father-figure was Bel.
Becca Stareyes
(There is a reason Bel currently is slowly re-considering his stance on parenthood, because a young Bel was in no way equipped to help a younger sibling navigate growing up in a matriarchy that considered both of them 'surplus sons', as he was still figuring it out himself... Bel now is in the 'well, I'm better than nothing' category for parenthood.
Becca Stareyes
(I think Bel might like to be a dad someday, but he has a LOT of shit to work through, because any biological child of his would be at least half-drow, and that might mean dealing with Faerun's reaction to drow.)
Becca Stareyes
(In the TTRPG, Bel's good friend River, an elf, wanted to have kids and was at least open to inviting Bel back to their home and seeing how things went... Bel was more in the 'I don't think you realize how many obstacles there are in the way that need to be addressed' camp there.)
Becca Stareyes
(One of which was that River was genderfluid AFAB, and Bel being gay was in the 'yes, we are biologically compatible, but I also know I find you much more attractive as a man than as a woman, and that doesn't seem fair to you'. You know, in addition to 'elf brings drow boyfriend(?) home to elf town'.)
Becca Stareyes
(Ilphyl I never know if I want to address them as a parent as a dad or a mom. Whatever, they know they aren't ready for parenthood, because they already feel like they lost too much of their childhood.)
Becca Stareyes
(By drow standards, Ilphyl is an adult. By elf standards, they are still an adolescent, albeit a prodigy given their skill at magic.)

SImon's dad is Septimus Torquill. We don't know much about him, besides that like Simon, Septimus was born half-human and had his blood shifted to be fully-fae to avoid prejudice against changelings.
Becca Stareyes
(Septimius did not tell Simon and his brother until someone else told Simon; because it was a stigma and because Septimus wanted to make sure the boys understood why they made that choice.)
Becca Stareyes
It does seem to have been a happy family: a dad, two moms, and three kids, and the mysterious child they were fostering

Simon's dad died when he was relatively young, in war
Becca Stareyes
Simon as a dad was very good to his elder daughter, except for the fact he should have not let his ex-wife treat his daughter as basically a doll to play with when she wanted and otherwise ignore. (Simon's ex was bad about loving people rather than her ideas of them.)
Becca Stareyes
Simon was midway through a century of being mind-controlled up to the eyeballs when his second (technically step-) daughter was born. She didn't realize he was legally her father by fae law, even after finding out he was 'Mom's estranged husband' and 'the reason Sylvester is Uncle Sylvester' until it came up in wedding planning.
Becca Stareyes
(Simon had become de-mind controlled then took on another spell to help his elder daughter, and younger daughter needed to invite both her parents to her wedding or one could claim it as an insult and cause a Scene. Bespelled Simon probably would have caused a Scene, so she needed to fix things.)
Becca Stareyes
The two of them now have a 'let's try this being legal family thing, even if you can't replace my dad' with a side of 'we spent six months with false memories of you actually raising me'.
Becca Stareyes
Simon has an understanding with Patrick and Dianda's sons that he isn't trying to be their parent, but he's open to some kind of relationship. he doesn't interact much with the older one who is not living with his parents. The younger son seems to have decided that Simon is okay because Simon is the reason he now has an older sister living with him.
Becca Stareyes
(And Dianda is now expecting another kid, so there is that.)

Penric... Penric is another character closer to his mother than his father. HIs father is apprently good at being a minor lord in fantasy!Switzerland, but wasn't sure what to do with a third son except 'marry him off to a merchant who has money and wanted connections/status'. (This fell through when Penric became a sorcerer.)
Becca Stareyes
Penric is an adoring father. He ends up having two kids (Florina and Llewyn) and adopting a third (Otta) when she ended up with a demon and her bio-family considered that against her religion. (Penric also sort of considers Otta's demon, Atto, a fourth child, and the closest Desdemona will get to having a child of her own.)
Becca Stareyes
He also has two girls he helped rescue who consider him a sort of honorary uncle, and he's friendly with one of his students' sons.
Becca Stareyes
(Des was born from raw chaos, so doesn't have parents, and Penric both her first male rider, and the first time she's been a parent, rather than just finding herself paired with someone who had kids. It turns out chaos demons and pregnancy do not go together.)
