I actually sent the account a PP right before this was made about this but I'd love it if anyone who knows resources to share for those who are disabled who can't physically attend protests this Saturday! such as organizations they could phone bank with, make signs for, fill out postcards for, etc
Also if you are going to protests, turn location data off on your phone, turn biometrics off and set it to a 4+ digit number code, have a phone number you can call incase of arrest written on your arm in sharpie, and remember the only words you say are lawyer.
Also milk and a face bag in your bag, even if they are listed as protests, the proud boys have -
...is that an issue with milk that's properly sterilized and stored? I know raw milk is a problem even for ingestion, but milk causing bacterial infections is new to me.
additionally, to repost from bluesky (and it's where i'll leave this as i don't want to get wildly off-topic): prep a bottle of isotonic saline if you have time
i mean probably don't pour milk straight in your eyes and just leave it at that, but i'm not finding anything immediately on health risks of facial contact with milk, so if there's documentation there it would be very helpful
-though right as i say that i did finally track down part of the infection thing. namely, milk that's been in your pocket all day might not necessarily be sterile, especially in summer temps. shelf-stable might have better luck, i'm not a doctor or someone who studies the specifics of food safety. but yeah.
PLEASE don't use milk! Punch a hole in the bottle cap of a bottle of water and use pressure to wash the eyes. There's a reason why eyewash stations in mfr facilities don't use milk, y'all. Use water, and wash the face with gentle soap like Dawn or Ivory after.
Use water, and lots of it, sprayed with pressure to wash whatever you've been gassed with out of your eyes. PLEASE don't use milk. It's gross, it's not more effective than water, you don't know anyone's allergies... just use water, please.
I was part of Occupy when we thought that using milk of magnesia with water was what was best, and then again a couple years ago for the George Floyd protestws in 2020 when people were straight up using milk, or baby shampoo, and it turns out water really is best.
...OK I've officially seen too much anime. It took me way too long to realize "NE" meant Nebraska, and was not intended to sound cute or prompt a response.
If you have funds to contribute, bail groups always need money. You can reach out to the National Lawyer's Guild for reliable bond groups to contribute to.
You can also contact your own elected officials and let them know what you think about what's going on down here. They don't have any direct influence, but it's always a good idea that your officials know where their constituants stand on world matters.

: As an American, based on my own activism in support of Russian political prisoners & Russians opposing Putin, a few of my tactics in that scenario, that could be adjusted for this one, have involved:
Signal boosting their posts, following them on social media, writing my elected officials to tell them to at bare minimum offer statements of support and solidarity with the Russians opposing Putin
I know they're using supposedly non-penetrating bullets, but IN THE EVENT of a bullet wound! If it's in a limb or shoulders/hips, you can stem bleeding by packing the wound with cloth. Ideally sterile gauze, but even someone's shirt is better than nothing.
If someone is bleeding from a torso wound, put that cloth over it and press down, with your shoulders above the injured so that your body weight is working for you.
This is a good resource for anyone who wants to learn what to do if someone is, idk, shot at a protest by some cop, soldier, or MAGA thug, or something.
reiterating not to use milk on pepper sprayed or tear gassed protestors; the advice to do so goes around a lot because yeah most people are used to capsaicin from cooking but even just a brief google search will show you piles and piles of "don't use milk" answers
That "double blind study" didn't duplicate the effects of pepper spray on the eyes. They abraded somebody's arm and poured capsacin on it - that's a very different situation. Anyone going out in the streets, please just bring a lot of water.
It'd also be good to know if there's a further reason specifically to not use milk besides concern about sterilization. I've been trying to find a source with actual details, but I'm mostly getting a lot of "do X don't do Y" with few or no specifics.
At least one said that milk can provide relief of the effect but may not be as good for flushing away excess, which would be a good reason but I'm not clear why there'd be a difference in that respect.

yeah, it seems like many tear gases at least don't involve chemicals with the particular properties of capsaicin that make milk helpful in ingestion scenarios but idk what flavor(s) of tear gas US riot police usually field
it may be best to advice water just because it's relatively safe, relatively sterile, relatively abundant, and at least pretty good for flushing exposed areas
There is no evidence that baking soda or milk is better than cool water alone. There is one small randomized controlled trial that found that baby shampoo is no better than water. Using baby wipes or makeup wipes if water is not immediately available may cause increased irritation.
Yep. Milk might neutralize pepper spray better, but there's really no way to be sure what you've been hit with is capsaicin, so it's usually not worth the risk of infection.
...yeah no I'd definitely avoid any detergents for that purpose, mucous membranes are very delicate. Even if it isn't good for cleansing something oil-based/hydrophobic, water is still very good for flushing affected areas and is about as safe an all-purpose washing fluid as there can be. When in doubt, water.
dish soap especially is not made for gently diluting highly fluid oils from mucous membranes, it's for dissolving heavy greases from things you can scrub vigorously, and if there's any appropriate medical use I'd really leave that to someone who's an expert in its application
........I wonder if there's specific law regarding the ability of the federal government to deny funding to a state, e.g. if the state can say "well if you want us to be financially independent of the federal government...."
I am not in favor of Blue State Succession for any number of very good reasons, but if he wants to deny federal funds to California that is some real Fuck Around And Find Out hours, Donny.
yeah no actual succession would be an enormous escalation that would make so very many problems for so very many innocent people, but i wonder about the transactionality of the state-federal relationship and what transactional recourse there may be to restore balance if one side doesn't honor their part of it
i mean there is a Constitutional Crisis in the fact that this is, in effect, the federal government reneging on the sworn agreement between it and the state
I've been thinking more and more lately "well if other states want to talk shit about california constantly fine let's not fund them anymore and see how they feel, especially with trump gutting everything"
and honestly I'm surprised it took this long for trump to do something specifically to cause chaos and damage in california to justify punishing it for something we didn't do
my family doesn't believe that trump hates california and wants to do everything to hurt the people there, because he views it as some liberal sanction state (when it's kinda not as exampled in the last plurk about this, it's a purple state in denial)
i personally think it plays into blue state vs red state rhetoric to even say blue states should cut off taxes to the federal govt. it's still us vs them language.
I'm for protecting as many americans as possible from this, and to me that means we don't leave people behind and don't engage in further divisional language
...well, not legally, but that only holds him back to the degree that his handlers are strategic about going after only a few threads of the fabric of the law at a time
...yeah i don't love curfews as a means of protecting the public, i'm not sure they actually help so much as they just try to force everyone to pretend things are under control for a few hours
but yeah anyway as I was saying, hopefully he's serious about being dedicated to sticking with california politics only even after he leaves office because by god I would probably jump off a building if he ended up a candidate for 28
Right now, wanting a good new governor candidate for CA is a focus for us, too. Because Newsom obviously has issues (technical and otherwise), but the violent rhetoric against California by supposed adults who are elected officials is really messed up.
but also I don't want there to be an overreach by the president arresting a governor, because that feels like one of those "fabled government overreach" things republicans wail about when there's a democrat president
