misty's parents are literally never mentioned in canon

her teen actress has said in interviews that she headcanons them being mildly neglectful - not extreme neglect, not cruel or abusive, just emotionally distant and very busy, to the point that misty was left to her own devices a lot as a kid

so that's the headcanon that i go with, too!

ultimately they're just... not important parts of her current adult life, or even massively important parts of her teen life

in a fanfic i had her mom be dead and her father be remarried and living the retired life in arizona, and that's probably what i'd go with if it ever came up in a thread

the only thing we know about shaw's mother is that she was an iranian academic who fled to the US during the iranian revolution, and that shaw is very proud of her :')

shaw is canonically fake-dead and living under an assumed identity, and so if her mom is still alive, shaw would have no contact with her for her own safety - but i tend to headcanon that she died when shaw was in med school

we don't get a ton of backstory from that far back for her, but by all accounts she had a very happy childhood, and her parents loved both her and each other very much

shaw speaks farsi natively despite never having lived in iran, so she almost certainly was taught by her mom;; they probably spoke it at home a lot

i also love to note that this was all done at the request of her actress; they had no particular backstory plans for her until she said "can shaw PLEASE be iranian, i've never gotten to play a character that shares my heritage" and the showrunners said yes, absolutely

it is!! and they do such a good job portraying it, too; she's not a stereotype, nor is it something that's expositioned at us and then literally never brought up again

she's an iranian woman who speaks farsi with taxi drivers, has strong opinions about middle eastern food, is protective of refugees, and is annoyed by xenophobia
