anyway so FF UB is like the best selling set of anything ever and that's great for FF fans, but I'm also in the Magic space (like super, super, super on the fringes but I'm there) and it's been so surreal to see the literal exact opposite reaction

if you're not in the Magic space, there's been an ongoing and serious discussion/worry about the future of the game

collaborations like the FF set are becoming more and more frequent and this coming year, half of all Magic releases are now being crossover events

And Magic players are worried that Magic is going to soon stop being about Magic

like Magic has its own characters, lore, storytelling, etc. and all of that is being pushed aside for FF and Marvel

A lot of people got into Magic because they love characters like Jace, Chandra, etc.

and there's a feeling that all of that is going away

so it's like as someone in both spaces it's like "I feel awkward that my special interest 1 is causing actual distress in special interest 2"

It honestly would not be so bad if again, it wasn't that half of all Magic product being released this year is price jacked crossover premium cards

it would be like if FFXIV's update cycle is "here's our FFXIV stuff, next patch is exclusively stuff about Fire Emblem! Next we'll do an Overwatch story!"

anyway back to Magic the quality of the writing hasn't exactly been great recently, but it is canon that a guy, upon entering a Redwall dimension, starts missing his husband and gets comforted by a housewife mouse with a sword

and also with cyan and his son switching places in terms of who dies

and like again no one's played FF3 so they don't realize that the Crystal Tower, one of the most important things in the entire story, is from FF3

and like, Shadowbringers is not the first FF story to be like "hey what if the light was super overwhelming and we needed warriors of darkness to balance it"

and it's not to say FFXIV is uncreative, it's literally FF's signature to call back to and build upon what came before both in game mechanics and story themes

"FFX and FFVII are the same universe" is a popular theory for a reason

and even though they basically turned to the camera and said "Endwalker is the FFIV expansion and Dawntrail is the FFIX expansion" it tends to be more nuanced than that

One of the things I really do enjoy about FFXIV is how well it fits these things into its own story and universe

i feel like shadowbringers is basically them looking at the concepts within ff3 and being like "okay what if we approached the concepts alluded to here with modern storytelling and also damn. the idea of the flood of light the warriors of darkness had to fend off in 3 was cool. what was that like"
