just finished blitzing my way through The Room 1-4 and GOD is that some good puzz

skerple
if you're looking for some just rock-solid puzzling, particularly involving Contraptions, you should absolutely give The Room a shot

skerple
also if you like stories about people fucking with eldritch bullshit they really shouldn't be fucking with

skerple
literally all the games are on sale right now and none of them are very expensive to begin with

skerple
like seriously

skerple
Steam Developer: Fireproof Games
go play the room for one dollar

skerple
you deserve it

skerple
there's an optional hint system

skerple
which I personally found mildly infuriating sometimes, because: you have to wait between hints and it's the style of hint that starts very vague and gradually gets more specific, but I generally found the puzzles accessible enough that when I did need a hint, it was after I'd spent several minutes fucking around and getting nowhere

skerple
so what I wanted from the hint system was "am I blind, please tell me what interactable I've missed or forgotten about", and what I got was a lot of having to wait for the game to tell me shit I already knew until it finally got down to actually giving me useful information

skerple
but the thing is that is a very minor complaint, even putting it into words makes it sound like a bigger deal than it was

pastel ranma
gosh yeah these games are so good

one more bite ★
me, an intellectual: oh hi mark

pastel ranma
I played through them a while back

skerple
pastel ranma
: THEY'RE SO TASTY. I had the first one in my library for ages before I got around to playing it

skerple
and then when I gave it a shot because I was in the mood for puzz I devoured it in a single sitting and immediately went to go buy the rest

pastel ranma
Tho my problem afterwards is finding games to scratch the same puzz itch

SPAAAAAACE
i have the vr version of this on my headset

SPAAAAAACE
the room one

SPAAAAAACE
i only played a few min, i might pick it back up

skerple
if I had a VR system I would go for that in a HEARTBEAT

skerple
honestly one of my favorite things about 1-4 is that it introduces very few new ideas as the series goes on

skerple
they nailed the formula first try and each subsequent game is just like "cool, let's do more of Exactly This"

skerple
so if you like the first game you will probably continue to enjoy the series

skerple
also the gamefeel. is IMPECCABLE.

pastel ranma
It's so much like fiddling with a magical puzzle box

skerple
YES

skerple
like. if the games were exactly the same but you only ever clicked on things to make interactions happen instead of having to slide switches and turn dials and stuff yourself, it would be a much blander experience

skerple
but you get to FIDDLE.

Hamlet 3.3.87

skerple
Hamlet 3.3.87

Hamlet 3.3.87
it looks like it's gonna fill the void Submachine left in my soul, at least for a bit

pastel ranma
Hamlet 3.3.87

plusqueparfait
Oh I've only played the first one HM

plusqueparfait
It was a while ago so I don't remember it but it was fun.

Hamlet 3.3.87

Hamlet 3.3.87
(and if you've played this and not Submachine, well. May I make a game rec?)

skerple
I looked it up as soon as you mentioned it and immediately added it to my wishlist

Hamlet 3.3.87
yesgood

Hamlet 3.3.87
it consumed my brain for like, a week, and now i'm just waiting for my godawful memory to dump enough of it that i can replay it
