[Gaming, Mute] Is it bad that I want a new video card just to play Oblivion Remastered on Ultra...
shrimp happens
my usual strategy is to buy $200-$250 GPUs because I don't usually play the newest AAA games when they come out. My current video card is one I bought in 2023 for that price... it meets the minimum requirements but not recommended

currently I play the game on High with textures on Ultra and... it is just not the best it could be

BUT I was looking around Newegg and I could upgrade to a card that is above the recommended requirements for $400-$450, AND the cards at that price range include raytracing, which my current card does not have

I think right now my cons are:
shrimp happens
1) slightly more expensive than my usual price range
shrimp happens
2) Oblivion Remastered is clearly not optimized to run very well yet and that might get patched

but the pros are:

3) GPUs are currently excluded from tariffs but might not be in the future, I'd be upgrading at a good time
shrimp happens
4) Raytracing and a card that could potentially last me the next 4 years at least
shrimp happens
5) I currently don't have any GPU backups, I could keep my current card as a decent backup if any new one I order dies

luckily everything else in my computer is fine, my CPU is actually right at the recommended specs and I have plenty of memory etc
shrimp happens
and honestly if I can find a deal and get one of these cards at under $400 I'd be a fool for passing it up
shrimp happens
(I'm running with AMD Radeons btw, I have never been an Nvidia girlie but if there's good arguments for switching I'd be glad to hear them)

mmph I do wonder if my CPU is getting old, it's one you can pick up for $70 now... it was $200 in 2021
shrimp happens
shit I already found one for $390 lol. I'd be upgrading from a 6650 XT to a 7600 XT... a pretty big jump
shrimp happens
and it has double the amount of memory too

squints doubtfully at Tom's Hardware charts...

now that I found the right chart!
shrimp happens
I could get a 7700 XT for $430, which is a very reasonable extra $40 for better performance
shrimp happens
damn I think I gotta snatch up this 7700 XT, it's the cheapest price I'm seeing for it

sorry for all my technical rambling! I just needed to talk myself into this

gotta buy 'puter now to have a good distraction from the world being increasingly on fire 👍

It's definitely a good investment!

I did something similar with grabbing a 3060 to upgrade my 1660 when the 4060 came out

yeah, esp since the tariffs have been so unpredictable, now is the time to upgrade. I literally had to look up online if video cards are affected or not

(right now there's a tech exception, but there's also been social media posts from the administration saying that the exception is temporary soooo who the fuck knows in the future)
