[work/not bad just personal/self confidence issues inside] tmw everyone is trying to help you with your hair and you get an uplifting lecture about taking care of yourself but you don’t want to reveal to someone you don’t know well your backstory about self confidence

Like I know they mean well but it’s so tiring since it’s something I’ve heard since I was a kid

Hair is so big in the African American community and I went out and did the perm thing which I’m still dealing with trying to fix to this day plus I just don’t think I look good in braids I can’t explain it

It just...I hate this idea that I’m seen as unkept because I don’t wear braids, or do natural or buy a bundle of hair I wear wigs and sometimes extensions but that’s it

I’m not ready to talk about my self confidence issues with someone who hasn’t even made it to c rank of our relationship!

It’s something I struggle with being an African American woman and has been since I was a little girl

I never wanted a perm because I knew it wasn’t good for you but I did it because that’s what was going around at the time and it took my hair out

Like I’ve had fights with my mom over my hair

I just don’t think I look good in any popular styles I mean I’m working through it especially through cosplay and stuff but still I struggle with it

I wash it, wear my bonnet, oil it, brush it but it’s still not enough

I mean I feel like I do take care of my appearance but it’s always been me and the African American community over my hair

for what it's worth, I think what you're describing is very valid. Your hair is yours alone. It's part of your body and it's up to you to decide what makes you comfortable. Even if someone means well that should never come in the form of a lecture. Advice offered should always be with the understanding that another person may not take it
