That's horseshit. There's a lot of Pokemon you could look at as the mascot besides Pikachu. A lot of Pokemon from first gen could be the mascot of Pokemon besides Pikachu.

Pikachu isn't even that popular to some people. Some people think other Pokemon really stole the spotlight right out from under it in Gen 1.
