I wouldn't think so, if it's something you really need to do. You can still buy necessities because well... life happens and gotta do what you gotta do.
It's a once a month event, so it's not something I can just say 'I'll go Saturday instead', but at the same time, it's not going to physically harm me if I don't go...
With the caveat that you might be asking the wrong person because of the area I live in, I'd say you'd be good to go. Especially if it's a local event.
(I could ride the State-managed bus both ways, but my father has asked me to avoid that because he's worried about me sitting on the bus stop alone that late at night.)
also... the goal isn't to stop spending 'all' money, from what I understand, but to avoid major retail and entertainment industries. so local stuff like going to your community theater putting on a play/that lady who sells eggs down the street/etc is encouraged, and for other stuff it's making a judgement call on necessity
and that part is just where it's a judgement call, but rideshare stuff... retail shop workers (usually) get paid whether customers show up or not. people making a living ride sharing don't
so I'd say it's best to minimize rideshare use since it does benefit the large corporation behind it, but it does also help people locally, so it's not like... just going to Target or ordering stuff off Amazon etc
also I'd say public transit doesn't generally apply, since (as far as I'm aware) it's usually not owned by and directly supporting a big corporation interested only in profit
I think ultimately you cannot put your life at a standstill or in danger to help the boycott. So like, you have to get home from the event somehow, and ultimately I think the value of you contributing to your local economy and nonprofit, and you getting home safe from that, outweighs paying for the lyft in the grand scheme of things
so pay for the lyft. it's like we can't ask someone to not buy a new tire if they need a new tire on the 28th because travel safety matters and being able to go to and from work or whatever matters for your well being
my issue at the moment is that I am HOME all day on the 28th, it is an extended weekend for me and I wanted to do things, damnit but like ...what entertainment can I watch??
Thanks. Reassurance that it's reasonable to not want to put my life on pause for this helps, a big part of my hesitation was feeling selfish about that. Same with the idea of supporting a nonprofit.
(Especially since the nonprofit in question is a club for members of a marginalized community, so it's supporting a safe space for people to express parts of themselves that are often misunderstood and judged.)
Yep! I was once chased by a dog, but the moment I turned around, stood my ground, and used a stern voice/body language, it stopped. It was chasing me because I was running.
(Of course, they can still be territorial or hungry enough that they'll try to eat anything that doesn't eat them first, so still best to excuse yourself from their presence unless it's an animal you know is socialized toward humans.)
Clearly local, community rideshare networks need to be more of a thing.
