in centurial, human beings can get powers in one of two ways

1. being directly gifted them by the god of the sea
2. being descended from someone who was granted powers

the immortal king of the country is the only one widely known to have these powers (the protagonist does too but he's a special case obviously)

so it's a mark of pride that his family has equally great powers

...but the problem is that it dilutes with each generation

so: court mandated incest! just like real life royalty!

it's EXTREMELY fucked

like it's absolutely horrible but also amazing worldbuilding
