(ers) [Prime Streaming] [Capitalism / Stick it to the Man] tl;dr: Markiplier was told if he can get eyes on this show, he could get his passion project into theaters. but Amazon shadow posted the show without notice
if you can stream Edge of Sleep even in the background to get numbers up, you'll help stick it to Netflix and Hollywood trying to reverse hack their own algorithm
i watched it out of curiousity and while I can say it's not really... my thing? It wasn't bad. I wasn't super impressed myself, but a lot of love and labor went into it from what I saw, so please do watch it.
While it is important to stick it to the man and there may have been some shady goings on behind the show actually dropping early, I want to point out that the focus needs to be on getting eyes/attention on a genuinely enjoyable independent creative project, not on spiting Amazon. Keep the energy up because we want to see more!
A Dracula
: a really good point! i have been wanting to watch but was going to add it for my list for later when i have more focus/energy. sticking it to the man is just extra incentive to watch in more immediately, rather than saving it for later
Also, from what I've seen the reason it's being "hidden" right now is because it's not supposed to be out yet. Nothing I've seen has indicated that Amazon isn't going to market it starting on its intended release date (tomorrow, 10/18)
Also, Mark has spoke to Hollywood elitism being something he struggled with before after In Space With Markiplier was nominated for an Emmy and... everyone treated him awful. Even celebrities and actors he admired, apparently, snubbed him or iced him out at the event. He was essentially ignored, which he said was mostly upsetting because reporters-
I've been following him creating Iron Lung for a while now and the love he's poured into that is so obvious that I just want him to succeed in showing us what he's spent so much time and energy on and give him that chance... so that others can have it to!!!
like I'm sorry, if you're not impressed with the /with markiplier movies (games? interactive experiences) on a purely technical level if nothing else, I don't know how to help you, my man
yeah, like... One was nominated for an Emmy! THAT'S A HUGE DEAL ON ITS OWN. Also, I am enjoying Edge of Sleep so far too! I enjoyed the heck out of the podcast and remember being sad the TV production planned just seemed to disappear into the void for a bit there so was excited it was actually getting released finally.
According to some research I did, someone said that "The data collecting and analytical tools at the disposal of streaming sites like Prime Video and Netflix are much too sophisticated to fool them with 24/7 rewatches in a loop, though. That would just count as a statistical aberration.
It's better to rewatch (or let run) s1-s2 once, over a few days."
so I finished watching last night over a couple of days and will probably re-watch/re-run this weekend. there IS supposed to be marketing campaigns etc. hitting today (as initially planned) too that might help boost numbers!
down with megacorp monopolies on the entertainment industry and elitism pushing out indie productions, his creative work is so fun and there's absolutely a market for it outside his (very loyal) fanbase. i thoroughly enjoyed the edge of sleep but even if it's not everybody's jam, his work deserves to be seen. let mark release iron lung!!!
there's so much legit terrible, soulless content getting pumped out by big companies that don't value the creatives behind it, let the little guy who's pouring his soul into his work and has a following that will support it do his thing, ffs.
it does feel like they're testing him to see if he can play with the big kids and completely ignoring that... it's actually pretty good. at the least it's fun and engaging and people like it. come on now.
in the livestream he mentioned that he would've done the trailer very differently and didn't think he was allowed to put one up showing other clips, but also what if he hyperfocused for the weekend and made one just because he loves editing and wants his to exist... guess he did that!

it's made it to 7 but if you can add momentum please do!
