TVLINE They really threw a lot of difficult material at you with the finale. What was the most challenging aspect or scene of this episode for you? maryandgeorge
N: Oh,that's such a good question. I mean, there was so much to do. There's that wonderful scene in Parliament … It was funny, because Tony and I did our parliament scenes back-to-back, and Tony completely smashed his out the park. And so, I remembered that being challenging, because also, in terms of George's dialogue,
it is much more of a physical performance in a lot of ways. Tony and Julie have these amazing sort of soliloquies, and Francis Bacon,as well. But George is sort of very quiet and ponderous. And so, that was fun,actually, to get to explore this sort of galvanized version of George.
The scene between George and Charles on the beach in Spain was really,really difficult because that was one of our final scenes,and it was so windy… and Sam[Blenkin's] 's horse was kind of difficult and kept wandering away from him. So I had to grab on Sam's reins to pull him close to me.
My wig was blowing in my eyes, so I couldn't see. I'm trying to get it out of my face. We couldn't hear because of the sound of the wind. At one point, a poly board snapped off,flew and jabbed my horse in the ribs. Luckily, no harm was done to the horse, but it's like a little kick in the ribs, and it makes them move a ton.
So just the technicality of that scene was probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do as an actor because there was so many challenges while trying to perform properly,as well.
Q:This may be a bit of a silly question, but prior to Mary&George, had either of you ever died on-camera before?
Galitzine: No,actually! Curran: That's all I do for a living. G: Is it really? C: Oh yeah. I've always been killed. (Laughs) G: Are you this generation's Sean Bean? Because famously, he's died in everything.
What do you both remember from those days of shooting the end of your characters’ live? What did you want to convey in their final moments? C: As he was trying to kill me, I injured him, as an actor, actually, with this ring. [Takes off his pinky ring] This was the ring that I wore. G: Wait, that was the ring?
C: That's the ring. This is the ring that I wore that I stole from costume designer Annie Symons. No, She gave it to me for the London premiere, but this was the ring when he's trying to suffocate me. Nick portray it so beautifully because he's ending someone's life, his lover's life, his father figure's life, a king's life.
But in many ways, what's conveying in Nick's face is… a part of him is dying as well. His soul is dying,actually, by doing this, and I think you can tell there's no joy in this sort of homicide. It's almost like part of him is dying inside.
He is a son who just really wants his mother to love him and approve and he goes very far to make that happen. G: I love looking at the early episode, him saying: I don't want to hurt anyone. I've never wanted to hurt anyone. And then cut to him in Spain saying:
Going back to that very last scene where everybody's around the table. How do you think Mary feels about what she's made of her family unit?
She's in conflict. To take your family from potential oblivion to going down in history as one of the most powerful families…I mean, we did press for the show at Corinthia Hotel, next to Villiers street.
That cannot be underestimated. But to not have your confidant, possibly her favorite child, the person who really made it all happen. There is an emptiness that mirrors that empty chair, within her. I love that final look into camera because it's kind of a bittersweet smile
“Originally it was supposed to be suffocating with a pillow, and then we thought there's just something not very visceral about that. We really wanted to see the exchange of betrayal and guilt and necessity between the two characters” Galitzine says.
He actually feared it wasn't “intense enough” upon first watch but realized how “impactful” this muder was after hearing feedback from others on the team. Despite George's hubris and ego in the final episode, killing James wasn't something he did with ease, Galitzine says.
“We have huge amount of remorse in the small interaction with Mary beforehand, and then going into the main action point, it's just pure necessity, it's survival.”
When Mary learns of George’s death, she doesn’t weep. She’s not even surprised. You almost think she had in his downfall. Did she? “I wouldn’t go so far as to say she wanted it to happen, but for a long time before and knew it was going to happen.” Moore explains. “It’s one of the reasons she tried to pull him back from the brink.”
“She’s not dead-hearted, but she is hardhearted,” Moore continues, “and she understands if you continue this path- that path where you’re just pursuing power for its own sake, there’s nothing else to balance you and you haven’t got anyone advising you- it’s going to end in, as it always does un history, a bloody way.”
