This gave the full pike a weight of nearly 3.5 kg. In battle, pikes were usually carried vertically at the right shoulder until the time came to charge the enemy, when they were lowered. During marches, they were carried almost horizontally, and period documents even describe them being supported on the shoulders of the ranks to the rear".
