do you ever just get mad abt a subject of argument that hasn't come up in your life in literal years. anyway sometimes I still think abt a dude who once was like "how come Eu art got so good and realistic and EA art still looked cartoony and bad" and want to break a table while muttering under my breath it's bc fluidity is a different skillset
a girl in love
that western schools of art still suck at actually so ofc art elitists will never acknowledge this

impressionism wasn't monumentally influential or anything and Europeans just made it up one day

find me a SINGLE western comic that conveys movement anywhere even remotely approaching the level of literally any bargain bin shounen manga

art isn't about fine-tuning the skillset of making things look pretty, it's about expressing emotion! unless the vehicle of expressing emotions is through portrayal of actual facial expression or body language because uhhh that's just comics for children or something

as you may have gathered I have combined this man from my past in my head with every single art teacher who has ever uttered the words 'stop drawing anime'

: see this still looks super stiff to me but I will say I think the hand as the speech bubble arrow is a stroke of genius

I posted it for the giggle more than anything else, anyway.

Ash!!1
bust in here is someone TALKING SHIT ABOUT WESTERN COMICS
Ash!!1
neither is bad its all a matter of aesthetics
Ash!!1
also let me introduce you to the OG one of the most influential western comics that i think about every other day

If you have never read Bone highly recommend, I thought I didn't like fantasy shit until this slapped me in the face and my world was expanded. That and it's not only FUNNY but every page, esp in the colored version is just...gorgeous
Ash!!1
then of course there are western COMIC STRIPS and like i don't need to sing the praises of calvin and hobbes but if you want creativity and movement i suggest getting an anthology of these
Ash!!1
now western super hero comics yes can come off as crazy stiff, especially in the early years but they have evolved so, so much
Ash!!1
but even then stuff like hellboy oozes personality and fluidity in their simple linework and use of heavy blacks
Ash!!1
look at those all might ass looking eyes
Ash!!1
shounen pulls from western influence and western influence pulls from manga/anime influence a LOT, neither is better than the other both are valid and beautiful
Ash!!1
Gawd i forgot bone has an amazing old lady ready to throw down all the time and one of the most weird/unique looking dragon characters i have ever seen
Ash!!1
he is always inexplicably smoking. i don't think this is ever explained.
Ash!!1
i do agree teachers who are like 'stop drawing anime' are bullshit tho lol. one told me that and i still got accepted into SCAD. suck it professor (i did not go tho cuz SCAD college prices are a fucking scam)
Ash!!1
also i'm personally not into this but you can't look at something like this and call it stiff. you just can't. it evokes emotion, it's funny, it's ironic. It is a different skillset, but again no better than any others
Ash!!1
when will i draw clothes as half as good as this
Ash!!1
oh wait thats the movie version. thankfully the comic is just as horrifying
Ash!!1
for stuff that looks actually stiff i'm not going to link it bu Watchmen fits this, tho I think the stiffness is deliberate since at the time it was parodying the hypocrisy of super hero comics
Ash!!1
not for me but i respect the craft, read it once and never again cuz Whew lol
a GHOST
one thing that bothers me about west vs east art arguments whether they're proclaiming either as inferior or just talking about the differences is that there's this tendency to treat both as existing in a vacuum
Ash!!1
really my overall statement: read Bone
a GHOST
big agree on reading bone also
Ash!!1
and yea same. All 'eastern' art isn't hecking anime and all 'western' art isn't superman comics
Ash!!1
and anime/manga/comics itself is so varied that people just point and go 'cartoon'
Ash!!1
anime is not a genre it literally just means animation and i still need to shake ppl about this sometimes

I did not actually mean "western comics art is bad/lesser than eastern comics" so that's my bad for not being clear

there is a general undercurrent of frustration I have abt western "high art" values where in the past "art" was prized as realism, until technical training became more accessible to poor people and then the standards for what counted as "high art" started shifting wildly to start discounting technical skill so it could still be an elite rich people arena ->
a girl in love
but there's like a lingering sentiment of like "technical skill was perfected in the Renaissance/Baroque movement or whatever and thus the Impressionists progressed art by starting to break the rules"
a girl in love
which just dismisses fluidity and movement as technical skillsets entirely. shrug emoji
