Something that has been bugging me ever since I saw the ad, I think it was for StitchFix... Marketing to women is so fucked up

papermint tiger
It was a woman who I would call 'chubby', the ad had her dressed in a skimpy top to show off her belly rolls

papermint tiger
And she specifically said something along the lines of 'is there a style out there that flatters my figure?'

papermint tiger
And the next shot was her dressed in essentially a potato sack

papermint tiger
It was patterned nicely and colorful, but it didn't flatter her even a tiny bit

papermint tiger
It just covered her up

papermint tiger
If she likes that style, fine!

papermint tiger
But it was the message that 'if you're fat, you need to hide' that bothers me

papermint tiger
I admit I then skipped the ad so I don't know if they dressed her in something nice after that

papermint tiger
But still that's the message I'm left with and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth

papermint tiger
Not like I was gonna use StitchFix anyway, but definitely not after that

Pen Again
honestly I used stitchfix once and it wasn't worth it. I think you'd have better luck actually meeting with a stylist of some kind

papermint tiger
I have a philosophy of 'the more ads I see, the less I am going to use the thing' and it hasn't steered me wrong yet

Pen Again
because advertising messaging aside, it's not really a styling service. it's like... pick out some clothes for me based on what you guys have and my parameters (styles I've chosen) so they don't even ...they don't even do what the advert was trying to advertise, really

Pen Again
and that's fair. When I started my office job, I had to buy clothes because I didn't have anything along those lines to wear (having worn a uniform for 3 years and gained weight), and stitchfix seemed like a FUN idea for clotheshorse me

papermint tiger
Not shocking... Today's ads seem to be less showing what things actually do, and more lying to people to get them to spend money even just once

papermint tiger
I'm sorry it wasn't what you were looking for

papermint tiger
On its face it seems like it would be a good idea

Pen Again
eh, it was fine. I got a blouse I use out of it, and I am sure it'd be more useful for someone who enjoyed having someone else pick out their clothes. I realized I do NOT

Pen Again
I also shop thrift and sales, so it was cheaper for me to just shop for things I wanted when I wanted them, or wait out for a sale.

papermint tiger
Fair!
