My man, knights aren't cops, knights aren't patrolling the village streets - that's the Watchmen's job.
CrowsbeforeBros
Knights aren't just soldiers with armor, you nob.

CrowsbeforeBros
that's like saying the mayor or the guy who owns your apartment block spends most of their work time writing parking tickets.
CrowsbeforeBros
(Because of the sins of Knights, it ain't cop, it's landlordism )
moontouched
knights are too expensive to be cops
CrowsbeforeBros
They're gentry at the lowest
oh i'm scary
one of the more confident Obviously Wrong assertions I've heard lately
CrowsbeforeBros
https://images.plurk.com/3qJXlqmNURKE8sDzYZxZH4.png this is the guy that's going to be chasing thieves
oh i'm scary
big-time D&D Is a Documentary thinking
CrowsbeforeBros
I blame GoT more here
oh i'm scary
really? because I was gonna say even GoT makes it like
oh i'm scary
Quite Clear that this is not what knights do
CrowsbeforeBros
but yeah if AsheLake walks up to any Medievalist and go 'Knights keep order in towns'
CrowsbeforeBros
they'll get laughed out
oh i'm scary
even the most determined-to-be-lawful-good-fantasy-hero characters like Brienne are not like
oh i'm scary
On Patrol
CrowsbeforeBros
Okay, more "People who can't fucking understand the basics of what they're watching watch GoT and Witcher and think this"
CrowsbeforeBros
because jfc it's amazing how many people are so media illiterate they can't understand the flashing highlighted points of what they consume.
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
the closest would probably be like...bodyguards? but like not all knights are bodyguards to the royalty. it's not a universal thing whatsoever and most kingdoms probably didn't call those guys knights.
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
like they don't police but they will like guard the king
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
saying knights are the police for is like...uh...no
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
*force
CrowsbeforeBros
yeah, they tend to have their own fancy titles.
CrowsbeforeBros
And yeah, most Knights are more like PMCs
CrowsbeforeBros
and some are landlords when they're not out killing someone
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
if knights are policing shit, it's because they invaded wherever they are policing until shit is settled and then they are getting the fuck out and leaving it to lower troops
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
it's just not their job
Mortarion
Yeah that's very wrong
CrowsbeforeBros
https://images.plurk.com/1iqobUVy5bQKrZH2vi5zgC.png
CrowsbeforeBros
that's... Not it either
CrowsbeforeBros
Knights are to keep Nobles from stealing land, revolts (I fucking hate marxist theorists, not everything is about class struggle you chucklefucks)
CrowsbeforeBros
(trying to fit tab A into Slot B of "Everything is about suppressing the workers ability to seize the means of production" is counterproductive)
EsperBot
Oh my god
Mortarion
man as a marxist, feudalism is pre-capitalism so like, this is some fuckin nonsense
Mortarion
baby's first theory
EsperBot
Yeah like
EsperBot
That is just like, sub-entry level basic Marxism
CrowsbeforeBros
Yeah, and it ignores Marx himself basically looked down on the rural poor and more or less left out agricultural workers in his theorizing. And guess what most peasants were!
CrowsbeforeBros
I note I say specifically Marxist theorists, because hoo boy, they tend to pull these arguments
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
Also like...saying that knights are there to keep workers from rising up against their masters but uh...knights were often the landlords holding claims over the people living and working their lands. wouldn't THEY then in fact be the masters???
Kαтѕσηα 2024✰
the logic is just so very confusing
CrowsbeforeBros
I flat out told them to go real some actual papers on knights by historians, I do not have the crayons to explain to this idiot
only goes to 11
I think the closest you can get is Lord Warden of the Marches, who operated like a sherrif and sometimes caught cattle theives because the theives were also doing clan warfare? But still not a knight
CrowsbeforeBros
pretty much, even in the late Medieval period when their war duties are largely phased out because turns out having mass trained soldiers is better than a handful of knights and a bunch of conscripted farmers, they're not going out to catch thieves or enforce social class oppression - they got other things to do.
