[trolls but also about humor in media] something interesting i noticed about trolls 3 that i haven't noticed in a lot of media but I wonder if it's going to show up more in comedies. is that everyone is being Watched

i mean like. you know when in scenes characters have "asides"

in Trolls there were a lot of moments where there were characters having asides in front of other people. And instead of being ignored by those other people, the other people are very DETAILED being shown to watch or spectate

one character tells another to be quiet so she can listen at some point, and in other scenes you just can very visibly watch the background characters listening to the conversations like it's hot goss

i thought this was funny because a lot of meida tends to rely on the tradition of the audience accepting asides are just going to be Allowed by other characters instead of acknowledged

sometimes we'll have that joke acknowledged by the "listener" character be like "I can still hear you??? I'm still here??" about certain scenes but this felt a lot more grabbing the trope by the throat to me

and i'm interested to see if this will become a trend in comedic media, the acknowledgement of the in-media audience of the characters, cos I think it's really funny

especially in media like trolls cos like idk about yall but if i saw two brightly colored mice talking in front of me i would also listen in

oh so like the shadow girls in Utena

YES ACTUALLY

but

less meta

more just bystanders in the scene like "bruv yeah ofc we can see you"

like there was a couple times the chars in Utena responded to the chorus and it was so jarring cause like it threw off the wall you thought you had between viewer and story

so that's cool that's happening casually in cartoons

like it's almost a return to what the essence of the greek chorus in tragedies
