Feeling better but now am reading abt Spanish-Holland war that dragged the PH in it. These Europeans & their wars.(eyeroll)

Apparently a "war of religions" happened in Netherlands: Catholics vs. Protestants. But of course in 1646 while the PH only had 2 ships against Dutch invasion, we have Nuestro Señora Del Rosario (La Naval) = miraculous win. (rock) ph
Lucy Stephanie
And guess what, we're still in the middle of Superpower "wars". (eyeroll) But apparently we are friendly with Netherlands for 70+ yrs.

It's one of those battles where I wish Drachinifel (naval historian youtuber) covered because how the hell did that happen? If I google the battle all I get is the wikipedia, and all from the perspective of the Spanish. I want to know how the Dutch recorded the battle. Like, I have a sinking suspicion that the Spanish didn't include Filipino deaths (LOL)
Lucy Stephanie
I know, I've also been trying to search for accounts in the Dutch side of history but it's hard to find... (LOL)
Mark (CG)
One of those what-ifs. If the Dutch didn't mess that one up royally, we could've been part of Indonesia in the modern day (lmao)
Lucy Stephanie
Too bad we had the Virgin Mary against them. (LOL)
Wikipedia has a source with complete indio drama going on By a Jaime C. Laya Wala Lang: When we got caught in between: ‘La Navál ...
Lucy Stephanie
Dutch invasion happened several times during the 17th century and each one of them failed.
Anyway I think I found one from the side of the Dutch. Will read muna.
Mark (CG)
kinda weird for the Catholics to prop up the Virgin Mary as a military bulwark against fellow Christians, but the whole time period was full of that bloodthirst and wanton savagery between the two factions. It's how we get the very fun word "Defenestration" popular after all (lmao)
Lucy Stephanie
Well hey that's what happened in the Netherlands but in the PH being an already Catholic country, of course they only had God to help protect their conquered land... (LOL)

But on the Dutch side they claim they never really wanted to invade the PH... or something. https://asj.upd.edu.ph/...
Lucy Stephanie
But wait, I never knew there's such a word. Savages. (LOL)
Mark (CG)
I mean their entire war was about becoming independent from Spain so I imagine the battles outside of Europe were more of a sideshow to have extra pieces on the negotiating table.
Lucy Stephanie
By that time Spain was already going broke. But heck, 2 + 1 ships against 10+? Clearly the impossible happened.
Mark (CG)
Or some fudging the numbers with some good old fashioned manipulating statistics (LOL) I'm still suspicious about how honest the Spanish were in reporting casualties. Were only Spanish citizen deaths recorded? Did they have a ton of wounded who died later after the battle and weren't included? Things like that (LOL)
Lucy Stephanie
I suggest you also read the link on the Dutch side but it's more on the trading perspective.
Mark (CG)
Huh, yeah the Dutch were more or less achieving their objectives according to your link. It paints a completely different picture from what's on wikipedia (LOL)
Lucy Stephanie
Lol at least now we know both sides of the story.
Mark (CG)
it's funny that the Spanish were like "oh no we only have two galleons" and the Dutch were like "OH FUCK THEY HAVE TWO GALLEONS" (lmao)
Lucy Stephanie
Just twooo.
Mark (CG)
Galleons being fuck huge ships that are basically the modern equivalent of a super cargo ship and a battleship combined
Mark (CG)
Yeah makes sense then that they didn't really offer battle, and just contented themselves to killing hundreds of people in outlying villages all over the country and disrupting trade. Those two ships are committed to Manila's defense, anyway
Mark (CG)
Drach recently made a video about one such treasure ship.
El Glorioso - I'm sorry, our treasure is in another ...
Technically a ship-of-the-line instead of a galleon since it was made a century after La Naval, but yeah taking down one of the treasure ships is a massive effort. This one took multiple groups of British ships several tries to defeat
Lucy Stephanie
Sooo no wonder they won then. (thinking)
Lucy Stephanie
Still 15 large and small ships against 2 galleons? (haha)
Mark (CG)
I mean if your cannons can't even do damage against the strong Philippine wood, it doesn't matter (LOL)
Lucy Stephanie
I know right, why even attempt to fight. No wonder they were running away most of the time. (LOL)
Mark (CG)
Also they weren't alone, they had smaller ships supporting them. Even the wiki says the Spanish had Brigantines (Basically what you imagine a small pirate ship is like), and your Dutch source mentions the Spanish fleet as having small ships of their own.
Mark (CG)
Oh fun fact the Black Pearl from the Pirates of the Caribbean is a galleon (lmao)
Mark (CG)
Man all this talk makes me sad that there are no really good pirate video games
Mark (CG)
the last one was made way back in 2004
Sid Meier's Pirates! on Steam
which is in itself a remake of the same game from the 1980s.
Lucy Stephanie
What the, may game?
Mark (CG)
Of the manila battles? Nah. Too niche. I was referring generally to Age of Sail games where ships like the ones from La Naval would show up
Lucy Stephanie
No, of the Pirates of the Caribbean. (LOL) Anyway nice tidbits of info.
Mark (CG)
and even then the games would be 1700-1800os era because that's when the sailing ships and battles were really cool
Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail on Steam
Mark (CG)
oh Pirates of the Caribbean had movie tie-in games
Mark (CG)
Lucy Stephanie
and you said there aren't any good ones?
Lucy Stephanie
except Pirates? hehe. Sadly di n ako nakakalaro ng games.
Mark (CG)
"really good ones". Basically a game where you can live a life as a pirate/privateer/navy captain and immerse yourself in the setting. the 2004 game was the last one that really scratched that itch
Mark (CG)
Ooh maybe I should try watching Black Sails again. Is it still on Netflix?
Mark (CG)
Black Sails | Opening Credits | STARZ
All I remember from the show is that the intro is amazing (LOL)
Mark (CG)
cool concept of a show. A prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" novel
Lucy Stephanie
Which reminds me, maganda yung Disney Treasure Planet movie. (woot) One of my faves.
Lucy Stephanie
Continuing on w/ my subject... The Story of La Naval de Manila - YouTube Based on this it says the Dutch eventually got 3 galleons but were still defeated. (LOL)

Moving on, meanwhile in Indonesia, the Dutch continued their capitalist conquest but still waged war w/ any Catholics they found there, e.g. killed/imprisoned priests accdg to
Religion in Indonesia - Wikipedia
Lucy Stephanie
But a Catholic priest from Netherlands eventually helped spread Catholicism a bit more in Indonesia. (haha)

I guess I should look into Islam conquering other countries next. (thinking)
Mark (CG)
You could always hound our Indo friend for context (LOL)
Mark (CG)
your Dutch source doesn't mention the disposition of the Dutch fleets, just that they stood no chance against the Spanish Galleons (which if you look at Spanish sources they downplay as being old and rotten)
Mark (CG)
I think at the end of it all I'm just highly skeptical of the Spanish. They seemed to really want to overblow their achievement in what is arguably a small sideshow of the war because they lost against the Dutch overall and wanted to reclaim some national (and religious!) glory by declaring a miracle.
Lucy Stephanie
I know right. Not much sources from Dutch side probably because they lost 4 out 5 of the fights. Dunno. Maybe it's just like the PH-US war, US is mum abt it. (LOL)
Mark (CG)
I mean the US did talk about the war a lot, just that you have to actively search for it instead of it being part of general education
Lucy Stephanie
Exactly. But in the US, apparently it's not being taught at all.
