When was the last time I played a video game about flying a spaceship around

Starsector is a game in the vein of Escape Velocity. You pilot a ship between various star systems, trading or fighting

top down 3rd person view, 2d graphics

the main difference from EV is that you bring a fleet into battle, not a single ship, but you pilot one ship with the option to give orders to others or just let them do their own thing

you can also jump between ships if your flagship bites it in battle

it has some pretty heavy ship customization which I think is a lot of fun
