[Writing] Okay. So any trans and nonbinary peeps? I need to ask a question.
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
I want to write a character who used to be female at birth but once came into age with getting their godly powers that let them shapeshift and (circumstances) forced them to go onto the run? They became a guy and began to use that as his default form but didn't hate turning into a girl if that was needed..
that omelas kid
What’s up
that omelas kid
Ahhhh
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
that is definitely non binary things right?
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
or genderfluid?
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
like. feeling most comfortable in a guy's form more than the old feminine one
that omelas kid
I mean, probably nonbinary but shits complicated? Some binary trans folks don’t care about that sort of thing either
that omelas kid
In my experience that’s less common, but it definitely still happens
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
i just wanna make sure i have things generally straight before i end up writing things the wrong way :>
E.S. Levi
From my understanding, even they might not be entirely sure what label is appropriate.
E.S. Levi
Gender is vague and fuzzy and confusing, and sometimes people don't know how to describe themselves beyond 'not cis'.
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
and considering it's set in a weird medieval fantasy type era
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
they wouldnt use the same terms
E.S. Levi
Though they might still have a concept of 'not simply one single gender'.
E.S. Levi
More historical civilizations have understood the idea than people think!
ChickletLARP
I would have said genderfluod more but yeah... a lot of us still don't know what to call ourselves at all. I consider myself inbinary, but that is just such a broad term... I just don't have one better for me. I feel neither male nor female and kinda hate being presumed to be either.

But I have written and RPed characters who go back and forth in various
ChickletLARP
ways too
E.S. Levi
One thing you should consider is if they have specific feelings about their gender presentation, or if they're wholly detached from the concept and just settled into a default as a matter of convenience.
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
well. the way i'm writing it is like.. the intention that he was afab but... the more he used his shapeshifting to be a male? he found he was most comfortable that way
E.S. Levi
Then he might be considered trans, I have heard from some trans people that gender euphoria can be a more clear indicator than gender dysphoria.
E.S. Levi
So if he's willing to present female but has no desire to, while actively feeling comfortable and confident presenting male, then I know at least one trans person who would call that transmasc.
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
ohhh
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
like. he'll shift to a female form if he has to
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
but heavily prefers being a male more often than not
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
i'm bad at describing things
ChickletLARP
That does sound like it then
ChickletLARP
And sounds like a fun character concept too!

thank you :-D

agreeing with the above! genderfluid is more like having different periods of time where different genders are preferred, if that makes sense. like, this character being comfortable presenting as female when he has to but never going through a period of time where he's like no actually i'd rather wear a female body today (or even a genderless body) --
apple thief 🍎
-- def feels to me more like transmasc than genderfluid.

but also like... as others have stated, gender is complicated and very little about it all is black & white, this or that.
that omelas kid
gender is complicated and he very well could also be genderfluid transmasc because so mujch of identity is just "what fits on a given day"
that omelas kid
but overall i'd play that with 1) less formal terms, 2) "a man's beating heart lies within the woman's body i once held" - sort of archaic/outdated ideas for it
that omelas kid
and combine that with an overall openness to other people's thoughts and ideas on the toppic
that omelas kid
basically a trans dude but with less formal cementing of the definition, if that makes sense
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
oh man, it does <3
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
thank you so much for helping me understand how to do this/write this character better
E.S. Levi
Might also be worth looking up actual old cultural takes on transgender and nonbinary identities!
✧ Łʏɳɛʏ ✧
i definitely will :-D
E.S. Levi
They weren't as unimagined as modern conservatives would have you think.
