You're Quinner
gamer confession I never played skies of arcadia
You're Quinner
does it hold up
Snowdrops ミ☆
rng for battles is horridly high
Snowdrops ミ☆
the story is still within my personal tolerance levels for anime bullshit but that's much more subjective
Niamh Vibes
I heard the Gamecube remaster lowers the rng but don’t quote me on that
You're Quinner
"I heard the Gamecube remaster lowers the rng"
--Nerdie
wedding rose??
It does.
bitchin camaro
i can't give an unbiased answer because i come from a place of nostalgia. that said i did replay it a few years ago and did think it was still a lot of fun
Niamh Vibes
Fuck, can’t believe you’ve done this
Drizzmas
I’ve actually been playing it for a few weeks now and it seems fairly good
Drizzmas
I’m also on the GameCube version and the rng is tolerable
You're Quinner
what do we mean by High RNG actually
You're Quinner
swingy battles? lots of random encounters?
Drizzmas
Lot of encounters
You're Quinner
ok
Drizzmas
I’ve only had one run in with enemies that I could not beat
borb
There is a minor penalty for running from a lot of random battles iirc which makes the encounter rate a little obnoxious.
bitchin camaro
oh yeah that is true
bitchin camaro
the reputation system discourages running
bitchin camaro
so if you get unlucky with a lot of tough/long encounters in a row you have to stay put or risk dropping your reputation
raspberrydrink
I adored it back on the dreamcast
raspberrydrink
it's def got some clunkiness of the era but the exploring and the charm are worth it imho
Niamh Vibes
I gotta be honest, I can’t remember much of the actual plot outside of the sky pirate aesthetic
Snowdrops ミ☆
basically you travel to places dictated by elemental moons to get macguffins before the bad guys take them for Evil. it's a very basic plot but the characters are very charming even if it's tropey
Snowdrops ミ☆
and the reputation system rewards you for playing a smart captain who thinks ahead and is optimistic but still careful to take his crew's wellbeing into consideration
Princess Emily
I watched a video about Skies of Arcadia just now and it's the most Skies of Arcadia I have ever consumed
Princess Emily
it seems like it was really popular though, where are the ten thousand sequels and remakes
BWAAAAAH!
It’s the last JRPG I actually finished
Rama
It's a really good cute classic story
Rama
Princess Emily : it was a Dreamcast/GCN RPG, so, hell
bitchin camaro
yeah, hell. the lead dev has repeatedly gone on record saying he would love to make a sequel but it just never manifested
borb
There's an LP I read on the archive when I'm feeling nostalgic, as I don't have a GameCube. It's one of my favorites.
DSTXC
the producer died last year which is a downer
DSTXC
but yeah, pretty simple and kind of unbalanced turned based rpg
DSTXC
overworld is nice, you can sail around and find 'discoveries' and get rewarded, music changes instrumentation depending on where you are
Rama
Not a strategic tour de force but you do get to do turn-based airship battles
DSTXC
straightforward and earnest plot and characters, nothing complex really tackled here.
DSTXC
the ship battles can be fun yeah
DSTXC
these icons are all just, in-engine, on the character models, so it's pretty fun to look at
Rama
It's slightly more apt anti-imperialism than most JRPGs just because pirates but
