[boyfriends wank again] > Person: I mean, I understand the series contains harmful stereotypes...
> James: I would love to know what you think those 'harmful stereotypes' are
duck bastard
> Person: all gay ppl are either jocky, preppy, goth or nerdy. it's really not that bad of a stereotype honestly i just wanna be a ppl pleaser, its only harmful in that it could give young kids an incorrect idea of what gay ppl are

aw bud,,
╭╭(V)▽_▽(V)╮╮🍂
in what universe is "peaple pleaser" not a worse thing to aspire to than being preppy, jocky, nerdy, or goth. :/
Haunted Boobs
...if they think those are current 'harmful' stereotypes about gay people, I wanna know what fantasy world this person lives in.
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
......honey, these boys aren't the only people in the entire world. They don't represent the entire population of the LGBT community they're just common student stereotypes wtf
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
I swear media literacy is DEAD
kyrie enjoyer
I was recently linked to a blog post that called this "the ditch" and damned if that ain't an accurate metaphor for this BS.
duck bastard
asdlasf yeah... yeah
Alice
what? do they expect them to all be drama kids? because that falls more in line with a stereotype
duck bastard
YEAH, LIKE...... if we're talking stereotypes, jocks are the last to be thought of as queer of any sort
duck bastard
at least, Back In My Day (tm)
Alice
but not understanding those are just common student types/cliques
Alice
same here. it was always the drama and sometimes the band nerds in my time
duck bastard
Preps were usually more 'metrosexual' or whatever the term was, too, iirc
duck bastard
honestly, the usual stereotypes as i remember them were all about doing straightness wrong - metrosexual, weird goths who wear makeup, nerds who never get a date etc
duck bastard
even now, I can't think of any of those stereotypes having the 'gay' thing attached to them
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
Here's assigning a deeper reading than it probably is but doesn't that mean anyone from any stereotype can be gay? That it's not just the theater kid/loner/quiet kid that media seems to push?
𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒏 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏
people have created this weird unattainable version of perfection that they expect everything to live up to
𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒏 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏
motherfucker just write your own damn story then

Alice
there's so much rampant entitlement in fandoms across the board now
Alice
if they put half the energy they do into into whining about other people Doing It Wrong as they do creating content according to their own preferences, they'd probably have quite a body of work
papermint tiger
...wait are they saying they're being a people pleaser by trying to say there is something toxic about this webseries
papermint tiger
Maybe examine yourself, sir/ma'am/other
ᴄᴀᴘᴛᴀɪɴ ʀᴜᴅᴇ
ah yes, the nontoxic stereotype of people pleasing such as portrayed in killing stalking,,
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
That's the downside of creators being so accessible nowadays. Everyone thinks their opinion should be catered to.
Cookie Politics
okay, but, even if "gays are jocks, nerds, preps, or goths" was an actual real world stereotype and not something this person just made up to justify hating something
there's more than just 4 queers in the comic
Rᴏʟʟɪɴɢ sᴛᴀʀ ★
wouldn't a smater takeaway be "anybody could be gay" rather than "only these specific kinds of people are always gay"? what an absolutely obvious refusal to think for themselves for even a second
MR SEPHIROTH
...the "think of the children" angle of this really gets me
MR SEPHIROTH
like buddy my first exposure to gay people in media as a child was "creepy, obsessive, and delusional side character" ... I think having four main characters who are all different brands of average human being is gonna be fine
Rᴏʟʟɪɴɢ sᴛᴀʀ ★
seriously
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
And in such a wholesome bar the R18 extra side content canon too.
Alice
yeah, this sounds like much better representation than anything I ever saw as a child
Alice
which tended no be no representation at all, villains, or having deep mental health issues
Alice
also agree about more access to creators contributing to fan entitlement
Haunted Boobs
God, yeah, when I was a kid my first encounters of gay people in media were 1) Very Special Episodes of late 70s and early 80s TV shows and...um....Three's Company, which I didn't fully get at the time because I was young and was very confused about.
papermint tiger
Before a certain time quite recently, gays were only depicted as the childless and single uncle, Theater People, and creeps. I prefer jocks, nerds, peeps, and goths over that
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
And young too, like... student young. The 'creepy uncle' vibe thankfully isn't as prominent anymore.
papermint tiger
Preps*, but I like the cut of autocorrect's jib
