does this dress look manang, frumpy, or too conservative? Snidel is a JP brand, this is their US outlet; my spouse says it looks like something the Quakers/Amish would wear.
It's too pretty and frolicy for religious people. I feel it as fancy cottage core; maybe with hints of "pretty princes". And I'd say it was inspired by dresses even earlier than 1920-like, 1900-1910s. It's way more casual than those dresses, but the sleeves and a general silhouette is kind of reminiscent of that period.

: Yes probably like late 19th century for the dress? I dunno why I thought of 20s when I was thinking of the fashion further back. Maybe bec of the wide brimmed hats. Not sure what time that was in fashion.

: Yea, it's like that last decade of 19th-the beginning of 20th, when women's fashion began to liberalize and modernize. When they dropped the petticoats and other means of changing the silhouette in that way, started to embrace the womanly body shapes, but still had lingering aestetic of "excessive" ruffles, lace, etc.
Honestly, I would wear that dress wherever. I wouldn't say it's very pompous or celebratory, only for special occasions. But I'm also a proponent of dressing lavishly daily. Cause life is too short to put off dressing pretty only for special occasions
