If the whole of top 8 had been modern controls then maybe you could make the case that they were too strong but it was one guy

Modern controls are intended to be an alternative control scheme, on par with Classic but not replacing it. And there’s just absolutely no evidence that it’s not succeeded in this.

It has upsides (one-button specials and supers allowing for easy reactions; you really can’t jump in randomly on an even half-way decent Modern player) and downsides (you’re missing some normals, and if they actually take advantage of its upsides your meter usage becomes less efficient).
